Description of Work

Position will function as a Transportation Worker II in our Alamance County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads in Alamance County. Routinely operates at least two pieces of equipment in performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks, such as hauling asphalt, aggregate or soil materials, plowing snow, spreading salt, compacting asphalt, compacting embankments, sweeping roads; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris. Working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which it is assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks, and litter pickup. Selected candidate must be able to operate the minimum amount of equipment required in the preceding level. Selected candidates at this level may train on and operate equipment associated with the journey level for a small percentage of time. Work may include lifting up to 50 lbs. repeatedly. Selected candidate must have ability to climb, bend, transverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Position is subject to emergency callback. Safety toe footwear is needed for this position. Selected candidate must be able to operate medium dump truck safely. Skill in the safe use & care of assigned equipment, hand & power tools, & perform manual maintenance duties & other duties as directed by supervisor. Selected candidate must have ability to act upon both verbal & written communication. Selected candidate must have ability to traverse steep & uneven terrain. Selected candidate must have ability to lift 50 lbs. Selected candidate must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. As part of the hiring approval process, NCDOT will run a driver license check after conducting interviews, but prior to offering a position.
Prospective drivers must meet the following standards to be eligible to operate NCDOT vehicles:
• No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years No convictions of an alcohol or drug related traffic offense within the past five years
• Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated (Note: Selected candidates permanently residing in adjacent states may operate a DOT vehicle using a current, valid, appropriate driver's license from their state of residence.)
• If a driver applicant has possessed an out-of-state driver’s license in the past ten years, the driver’s record from the state(s) involved shall be obtained. Such applicants and those who currently possess an out-of-state driver’s license will be responsible for providing their driving records from the appropriate states.
pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC05: $33,902 - $59,327

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
  • Experience in one of the following: Shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.
  • Experience with installation of erosion control devices.
  • Knowledge of work zone safety and NCDOT workplace policies and procedures.
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
