Sky Rail Field Service Technician
Reports to Plant Manager  •  Full-time, Non-Exempt  •  Allegan, MI
Weekdays, occasional weekends  •  8-hour shift  •  Occasional on-call and travel
Hourly range $25.00–$35.00, based on qualifications, skill, and experience
The company
RCI Adventure Products designs and manufactures aerial adventure attractions used worldwide. We build in Michigan and Malaysia. The culture is hands-on, execution-minded, and safety-first. People who do well here finish the work, help the customer get back to operating, and treat the product as a system that has to function—not as a theory.
The role
This position supports customers who operate Sky Rail® systems, including Sky Rail elements on Sky Trail® and Sky Tour®. You learn the mechanical and electrical assemblies in production first. You then use that knowledge to inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair Sky Rails by phone, email, video, and technical documents. When remote help is not enough, you travel to the site.
You also build and verify Sky Rail assemblies in the plant so field work stays aligned with current production. The measure of the job is a working system and a customer operator who can run daily checks without you on the phone.
This is a supporting technical role with real accountability. You are not designing the product and you are not managing the site. You are the person who diagnoses what is actually wrong, follows the safe method, documents the finding, and gets the rail running.
The person who fits
We hire for how you work when a customer is down and the answer is not in a script. The person who succeeds here typically:
Puts the customer’s operating need first and stays with the problem until the system works or the next clear step is owned.
Starts without being told. Sees an open ticket, a failed assembly, or a missing photo set and begins.
Talks non-technical operators through diagnosis by phone and video with patience and plain language.
Follows drawings, lockout/tagout, height rules, and documented troubleshooting—even when a faster shortcut is tempting.
Keeps tools, photos, parts records, and service files in order so the next person can pick up the work.
Makes function-first decisions: what is actually broken, what is wear, what is owner damage, what is warranty.
Uses what they have already seen on other rails, and looks up the specific knowledge when the pattern is new.
Works as part of production, inventory, and engineering without needing the spotlight.
Wants practical results—the rail runs, the right kit ships, the report is usable—not a theoretical deep dive.
Stays even when the first fix does not hold. Persistence matters more than speed of talk.
What this role is not
Not a desk-only support job. You will build in the plant and work at height on customer structures.
Not an engineering design seat. You feed field failures back; you do not redesign the product on your own.
Not a role for someone who avoids customers or cannot stay calm with a frustrated operator.
Not a place to freelance methods. Safety procedures and documented steps are the job.
Not a high-visibility leadership role. Contribution and a working system matter more than individual recognition.
Not a single-track routine. Plant build days, remote tickets, and travel days will mix.
Responsibilities
Know the product in the plant
Learn to assemble Sky Rail components, subassemblies, and complete assemblies from drawings, blueprints, and parts lists.
Build electrical and detailed mechanical Sky Rail assemblies in production as needed, including trolleys (TSA / SRTSA), brake systems, sensors, control boxes, and related hardware.
Verify connections, fit, and function before an assembly is used in production or shipped to a customer.
Help refine production and service processes so plant builds and field repairs stay consistent.
Use instruments and test gear, including a multimeter, to confirm specifications and performance.
Diagnose and restore customer systems
Work with customer operators and maintenance staff by phone, video, photos, and technical documents.
Diagnose issues involving mechanical trolleys, brake cars and return systems, rotor gates, sensors, control boxes, motor controllers, and electronic decelerators.
Guide customers through daily and startup checks, reset procedures, and documented troubleshooting.
Rebuild and inspect trolley assemblies and related kits (wheels, cable guards, wear parts) in the shop and in the field.
Decide warranty versus owner-responsible damage and document the finding with photos and a written explanation.
Travel to customer sites when remote assistance cannot finish the repair—about 30 days a year. Occasional on-call after hours and weekends.
Keep the work usable for the next person
Create or update service instructions, preventive-maintenance checklists, and customer troubleshooting guides when a site has a specific or repeating need.
Identify spare-parts needs, recommend stock kits for high-use sites, and coordinate with production and inventory so the correct parts ship with clear install notes.
Organize technical service files, photos, and project records so they can be found and reused.
Feed recurring field failures back to production and engineering.
Train customer maintenance staff on basic Sky Rail care, lockout/tagout, working-at-height expectations, and when not to open a locked control box.
Complete quality, production, and service forms. Document all remote and on-site work. Submit status on open service projects.
Follow safety and housekeeping standards, including lockout/tagout on 120 V systems and safe work at height.
How the week actually feels
Some days you are in the plant building and verifying assemblies. Some days you are on a video call walking an operator through a reset. Some weeks you are on a customer structure with tools, a camera, and a parts list. You will be asked to decide what is wrong and what ships next—not to wait for a perfect brief.
People who like functional problems, customer contact, and finishing the repair do well. People who want only bench work, only travel, or only theory do not.
Required experience
Electrical experience required.
Experience with industrial automation and PLCs (Allen-Bradley preferred).
Familiarity with sensors, motor controllers, and 120 V control panels.
Familiarity with hand tools and a multimeter.
Able to walk a non-technical operator through diagnosis by phone and video.
Organized documentation habit: photos, written findings, parts records.
Precision and attention to detail on assemblies that affect guest-facing equipment.
Computer skills including word processing and Google Workspace.
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel independently.
Comfortable working at heights and following lockout/tagout.
Preferred: prior field service, amusement/attraction maintenance, or industrial controls in a customer-facing setting.

Physical requirements
Regular standing for long periods; frequent walking; occasional sitting, reaching, stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Must lift and/or move 50 pounds or more. Must work at heights on platforms and rail structures, in customer facilities, and in the manufacturing plant.
