Description of Duties:                                                                        **** Shift Hours: 8am-5pm ****

Objectives of this Role: 

The Billing Specialist plays a crucial role in the financial operations of a behavioral health outpatient clinic. This position is responsible for managing the billing processes, ensuring accurate and timely submission of claims, and maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations. The role requires a detailed understanding of medical billing procedures, insurance protocols, and behavioral health services. The Billing Specialist is vital to the financial health of the outpatient behavioral health clinic. By ensuring accurate billing and efficient claims processing, the specialist helps sustain the clinic's operations and supports the delivery of quality mental health services to patients.

Key Responsibilities:

Accurately process and submit claims for outpatient behavioral health services, including individual therapy, group therapy, medication management, and psychiatric evaluations. Process transportation billing, Family Support billing and any other categories of revenue generation. Verify patient insurance coverage and eligibility prior to service delivery to prevent claim denials. Follow up on unpaid claims and resolve any discrepancies or denials promptly. Maintain detailed records of billing activities, payments, and correspondence with insurance providers and patients. Review and process authorization requests across all payors, as needed. Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and other relevant healthcare laws to protect patient confidentiality and data security. Collaborate with clinical staff to verify billing codes, authorization status and documentation accuracy for services rendered. Assist patients with billing inquiries and provide clear explanations of charges and payment options. Reconcile accounts receivable and generate financial reports to monitor revenue cycle performance. Stay updated on changes in insurance policies, coding standards, and healthcare regulations affecting behavioral health billing. Assist front office staff at the outpatient clinics, as needed. Travel to service/administrative sites, as necessary to complete assigned duties.


Qualifications:  High school diploma/GED and two (2) years of job-related experience in accounting, billing, or budget services; or one (1) year of job-related experience at the lower level Billing Spec 1 (FIP070) or position equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Certification in medical billing or coding is preferred.
  • Proven experience in medical billing, preferably within behavioral health or mental health settings.
  • Knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Familiarity with billing software and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with insurance companies, patients, and clinical staff.
  • Understanding of healthcare regulations and compliance standards.
