The Assistant Produce Manager supports the Produce Manager in leading all aspects of Produce Department operations, including merchandising, inventory control, associate development, customer service, food safety compliance, and financial performance. This position plays a key role in ensuring fresh, high-quality products are available to customers while maintaining department standards, driving sales, minimizing shrink, and promoting a positive, team-oriented work environment.
Key Responsibilities Department Leadership & Operations- Assist in overseeing the daily operations of the Produce Department.
- Ensure department standards for stocking, rotation, culling, and product presentation are consistently maintained.
- Help coordinate daily workloads and prioritize tasks to meet business needs.
- Support department readiness throughout all operating hours.
- Assume leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Produce Manager.
- Provide exceptional customer service and foster a customer-focused culture.
- Assist customers with product selection, preparation recommendations, and produce-related inquiries.
- Resolve customer concerns professionally and efficiently.
- Promote department sales through product knowledge and customer engagement.
- Ensure customers experience a clean, organized, and well-stocked department.
- Maintain attractive, fresh, and abundant product displays.
- Monitor product quality and remove damaged, outdated, or unsellable merchandise.
- Assist with inventory management, ordering, and receiving procedures.
- Help ensure accurate pricing, signage, and promotional execution.
- Support shrink reduction efforts through proper handling, rotation, and inventory control practices.
- Assist with training, coaching, and developing Produce associates.
- Provide daily direction and support to team members.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and productivity.
- Reinforce company policies, procedures, and performance expectations.
- Encourage a positive workplace culture focused on safety and customer service.
- Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor proper product handling, storage, rotation, and freshness standards.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized department.
- Promote adherence to workplace safety guidelines and operational procedures.
- Assist with department audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.
- Support efforts to achieve department sales, gross profit, labor, and shrink goals.
- Monitor operational performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Assist with controlling expenses through effective inventory and labor management.
- Support company programs and initiatives designed to improve profitability.
- Contribute to overall store success through consistent operational execution.
- Previous produce, grocery, retail, or supervisory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of produce handling, merchandising, and quality standards preferred.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to lead, motivate, and develop associates.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management abilities.
- Basic computer, inventory, and operational knowledge.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
- Ability to lift and move products consistent with department requirements.
- Ability to work in refrigerated and varying store environments.
- Ability to operate department equipment safely.
