Job Description

The Automation Engineer tests, creates, implements and desktop automations. Performs design, scripting, testing, implementing, maintaining and modifying automations of moderate complexity, significance, and risk. Creates comprehensive test plans and test cases; defines automation data needs across systems and creates a plan to coordinate this test data. Creates and executes performance tests to ensure the expected automation performance levels are achieved. Performs, and at times, leads clients and technical staff to investigate, analyze, and resolve technical problems. Writes documentation that describes automation capabilities and operating procedures. Estimates and defines time tables and project tasks; analyzes and estimates cost and time. Conducts analysis of organizational needs for the creation and implementation of automation solutions; participates in feasibility assessments of new automation opportunities and helps determine best approach for automation.

Job Responsibility:

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable test automation frameworks and solutions to ensure the quality, reliability, and performance of enterprise payment and software platforms.
  • Create, execute, and optimize automated API test suites using tools such as Postman, Bruno, ReadyAPI, Groovy scripting, and Citrus or similar automation frameworks.
  • Develop high-quality automation code using Java and apply software engineering best practices to build reusable and maintainable test solutions.
  • Convert manual test cases, business requirements, and API collections into robust automated regression and integration test suites.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, product teams, and quality assurance partners to identify, reproduce, troubleshoot, and resolve application defects.
  • Analyze application logs, troubleshoot test failures, and perform root cause analysis using monitoring and observability tools such as Datadog.
  • Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and related DevOps tools to support continuous testing and accelerated software delivery.
  • Participate in code reviews, pull request reviews, and automation design discussions to ensure adherence to quality and development standards.
  • Develop and maintain test data, test environments, and automation assets to support functional, regression, integration, and end-to-end testing activities.
  • Utilize source control and Agile development tools, including Git, Jira, IDEs, and pull request workflows, throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Enhance and maintain test automation frameworks leveraging technologies such as Citrus, Selenium, Cucumber, TestNG, and other industry-standard tools.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to improve testing strategies, increase automation coverage, and drive defect prevention initiatives.
  • Leverage AI-powered engineering tools such as GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar technologies to improve automation development efficiency and code quality.
  • Apply Generative AI (GenAI), Large Language Models (LLMs), and prompt engineering techniques to support AI-assisted software development and testing practices.
  • Utilize AI-driven capabilities to generate test cases, create test data, analyze defects, develop automation scripts, and optimize overall test coverage and engineering productivity within an Agile environment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience
  • Seven to nine years of relevant work experience with programming concepts, development logic or automating complex API processes


Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Proficient in working with APIs, including API testing and tools such as Postman or Bruno.

  • Hands-on experience with Citrus or other test automation frameworks (preferred).

  • Strong programming skills in Java.

  • Capable of converting manual test cases or Postman collections into automated test scripts.

  • Experienced in analyzing and debugging logs using Datadog.

  • Able to collaborate effectively with development teams to identify, reproduce, and resolve bugs.

  • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines using tools like Jenkins.

  • Familiarity with Selenium, Cucumber, and TestNG is a plus.

  • Experience in API automation testing using ReadyAPI and Groovy scripting or similar tools.

  • Understanding of software development processes and tools including Git, Jira, IDEs, and Pull Requests.

  • Experience using AI-powered development and testing tools such as GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar platforms to improve test automation, code quality, and engineering productivity.

  • Familiarity with Generative AI (GenAI), Large Language Models (LLMs), prompt engineering, and AI-assisted SDLC and testing practices.

  • Experience leveraging AI for test case generation, test data creation, defect analysis, automation script development, and test coverage optimization.

Location expectations 
This role requires working from a U.S. Bank location three (3) or more days per week.

The salary range reflects figures based on the primary location, which is listed first. The actual range for the role may differ based on the location of the role. In addition to salary, U.S. Bank offers a comprehensive benefits package, including incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase 401(k) contribution and pension (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). Pay Range: $98,175.00 - $115,500.00
