Fitness Center Desk Intern

Position Summary:

Works in the Westwood Fitness Center assisting and checking-in members and guests as needed to use the facilities. Promptly greets club members and verifies their membership using appropriate computer database/roster. Monitors the Fitness Center, checks locker rooms hourly, maintains shift checklist, and assists with the coffee bar as needed. He/She carries out other tasks assigned by the Fitness Director, Aquatics, Business and other department heads. This is an hourly position with varying hours.

Position Characteristics:

A successful Fitness Center Desk Clerk is friendly, organized, flexible, and able to multi-task. Must have excellent communication skills in order to effectively check-in members and perform assigned daily checklist tasks. Will serve as the back-up coffee bar attendant at the Lakeview Café in the Fitness Center. Should possess a positive attitude and always uphold a professional manner. He/She should have previous customer-service experience and enjoy assisting others in a fitness environment.

Essential Job Functions: *including but not limited to*

  • Greet all members in a friendly manner by name if possible. Ensure proper member check-in procedures for Fitness Center use. Politely ask for each         member’s name and number and record information in the log with appropriate check-in/check-out time
  • Verify membership with roster and/or the Club’s computer database.
  • Take and record usage stats for cardio, cybex and pool areas every 30 minutes.
  • Record guest information when necessary
  • Monitor activity in the Fitness Center. Observe and record statistics on the activity and use of fitness equipment (e.g. number of members using the treadmills or weight machines per day, etc.)
  • Is courteous, helpful, friendly, and attentive at all times. Refer questions to Fitness Director if unable to satisfy member.
  •  Uphold policy limits for usage by minors. Request identification for all members under the age of 25 using member roster and ID log.
  • Check both locker rooms hourly; pick up towels and kindly report any cleaning issues to maintenance for prompt attention; maintain shift log and monitor/check necessary lists daily.
  • Carry out the Fitness Desk processes and procedures.
  • Clean and maintain a proper reception desk and gym floor environment.
  • Report equipment issues to the Fitness Director and Westwood Maintenance Department
  • Notify appropriate department leaders in case of an emergency.
  • Input revenues as directed and perform business-related office tasks when requested.
  • Carry out and perform duties or tasks as asked by Aquatics or other department heads and/or the Business Office
  • Carry out Coffee Shop Attendant duties and other job-related tasks as assigned by the Fitness Director

Preferred Education and/or Experience:

Prefer one year or more of custom-service and/or administrative experience. Ability to document, record and maintain statistical and log-in records.

Physical Demands:

This position routinely requires sitting, standing, walking, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, holding, twisting, reaching, climbing stairs/ladders, and the ability to lift at least forty pounds. Must be able to work quickly and accurately in a custom-service oriented environment.

Appearance and Grooming:

All employees are required to follow the guidelines set forth by the associate handbook regarding proper workplace appearance. Employees must adhere to their department’s specific uniform requirements.

Language Skills:

Ability to listen, give and follow directions; speak clearly and concisely to maintain proper, effective communication with members and staff.

Reasoning Abilities:

Work quickly and accurately, both independently and as a part of a team. Exercise good judgment, perform detailed tasks; understand and follow verbal and/or written instruction. Use discretion and exercise good judgment, and acknowledge all members, guests, and staff checking-in or walking past.

Work Environment:

The noise level in the workplace is usually moderate, but sometimes loud, characteristic of a country club food and fitness center. The work environment is comparable to other food service industries and fitness centers but may include atypical or extraordinary conditions.
