JOB SUMMARY:

The Med Surg / ICU Free Charge RN is responsible for overseeing daily clinical operations within the assigned unit(s) without a patient assignment. This role provides leadership, coordination of patient care activities, staff support, and ensures high-quality, safe, and efficient care delivery. The Free Charge RN serves as a clinical resource and liaison between staff, physicians, and leadership, including oversight of outpatient infusion services and related safety practices. Shift Schedule: 6:30a-6:30p



JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Qualification Requirements:

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license (state-specific)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
  • Minimum 3–5 years of acute care experience (Med Surg and/or ICU required)
  • BLS required; ACLS required (ICU setting), PALS required, CPI Required  


Experience:

  • Prior charge nurse or leadership experience strongly preferred
  • Experience of demonstrated competency in outpatient infusion therapy preferred


Language Skills:

  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:           

  • Coordinate daily staffing assignments and patient flow for Med Surg and ICU units
  • Act as the primary clinical resource for nursing staff during the shift
  • Provide real-time problem-solving and decision-making support
  • Facilitate admissions, transfers, and discharges efficiently
  • Serve as the escalation point for clinical and operational concerns
  • Ensure adherence to evidence-based practices, policies, and procedures
  • Monitor patient acuity and staffing needs to ensure safe care delivery
  • Assist with complex patient care situations as needed
  • Respond to emergencies, including rapid responses and codes
  • Oversee outpatient infusion services, ensuring safe and effective administration of therapies (e.g., antibiotics, biologics, blood products, hydration therapy)
  • Provide clinical guidance for patient assessment, venous access, and monitoring during outpatient infusion treatments
  • Ensure adherence to protocols for outpatient infusion therapy, including patient identification, medication verification, and monitoring requirements
  • Promote safe administration practices for high-risk medications administered in the outpatient setting
  • Monitor for infusion-related reactions and ensure appropriate intervention and escalation when needed
  • Collaborate with pharmacy and providers regarding medication preparation, compatibility, and dosing
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of equipment (e.g., smart pumps)
  • Verify accurate documentation, labeling, and patient education for outpatient infusions
  • Mentor and support nursing staff, including new hires, float staff, and contracted staff
  • Promote a positive, professional, and collaborative work environment 
  • Provide coaching and feedback to improve clinical performance
  • Assist with conflict resolution among staff when needed
  • Serve as liaison between nursing staff, physicians, ancillary departments, and leadership
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and care coordination
  • Communicate unit updates, concerns, and operational needs to management
  • Monitor quality indicators (falls, infections, patient satisfaction, medication safety, infusion-related events, etc.)
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and audits
  • Support safe medication administration and documentation practices
