Birdon America, Inc. is seeking a Shipfitting lead to join our growing team at our Bayou La Batre, Alabama shipyard. This is a great opportunity for you to provide your knowledge and skills to a growing company in building a new Coast Guard vessel.  

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to tack, distribute heat evenly with a clean bead.
  • Must be able to pass the pre-employment testing.
  • Excellent math skills with ability to read a tape measure accurately.
  • Ability to properly repair a defective work.
  • Ability to operate safety equipment and use safe work habits, coaching and instilling these in workers.
  • Must be able to operate power tools (grinders, saws, and drills) and assigned welding process equipment.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills, quality driven initiatives.
  • Responsible for day to day oversight of shipfitters on projects, inspects worker efforts for quality and performance.
  • Ensures directives given by Foremen/Superintendents are fulfilled.
  • Evaluates performance of team members.
  • Serves as backup for their Shipfitting Foreman in their absence.

Qualifications and experience: 

  • Experience in ship/boat building industry welding aluminum, carbon steel, Stainless Steel.
  • Experience with assembly and erection of vessel panels, subassemblies and components.
  • Proficiency in shipfitting, pipe fitting, shipfitting supervision and economics of shipbuilding.
  • Must be able to read blue prints and weld schedules, maintains designed dimensional accuracy
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Must be able to stand, bend, stoop, squat or kneel regularly as well as climb stairs and ladders to complete tasks.
