GIS Specialist

Supports the cooperative's Geographic Information System and helps maintain accurate mapping and system data for the electric distribution network. This position works with maps, records, field information, and other data used by employees throughout the cooperative to operate, maintain, and plan the electric system.

This role is a good fit for someone who enjoys working with maps, technology, data, and detailed information. The GIS Specialist works closely with engineering, operations, staking, dispatch, and other departments to help ensure electric system records are accurate, complete, and useful.

What You'll Do

Responsibilities may include:

• Maintain and update GIS maps and electric distribution system records.
• Enter, edit, and verify information for poles, lines, transformers, meters, switches, substations, and other electric system assets.
• Update GIS records based on construction, staking, inspection, maintenance, and field documentation.
• Review maps, work orders, drawings, and other records for accuracy and completeness.
• Research and resolve discrepancies between GIS records and information provided by employees in the field.
• Create maps, reports, and other GIS products for engineering, operations, management, and other departments.
• Assist employees with locating facilities and accessing GIS information.
• Support data exchanges and integration between GIS and other cooperative systems.
• Help maintain consistent data standards, naming conventions, and mapping practices.
• Perform quality-control reviews to identify incomplete, inaccurate, or duplicate information.
• Assist with GPS data collection, field verification, or other mapping activities as needed.
• Maintain records related to rights-of-way, service territory, infrastructure, or other geographic information as assigned.
• Help improve GIS processes, data quality, documentation, and system usability.
• Maintain the confidentiality and security of cooperative system information.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

Candidates should:

• Have an associate or bachelor's degree in GIS, geography, engineering technology, computer science, surveying, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Have experience with GIS software and geographic data.
• Be comfortable working with maps, databases, spreadsheets, and technical information.
• Have strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining accurate records.
• Be able to research problems, identify inconsistencies, and work toward practical solutions.
• Have good communication and organizational skills.
• Be able to manage multiple assignments and follow established procedures.
• Work effectively both independently and with employees from technical and non-technical departments.
• Be willing to learn electric utility terminology, equipment, and system design.
• Experience with Esri ArcGIS products, electric utility GIS, GPS equipment, CAD, utility mapping, or related systems is preferred but not required.

Position Details

This is a full-time position supporting the mapping and data needs of an electric distribution cooperative. The GIS Specialist plays an important role in maintaining reliable information about the cooperative's electric system and providing employees with the maps and data they need to safely and efficiently serve members.

Schedule: Normal working hours start at 8:00 am and end at 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday.
