Road & Rail Services is hiring Vehicle Handlers / Railcar Loaders to support automotive rail operations at the BNSF facility in Birmingham.
This is an active, outdoor job where you will help move new vehicles safely on and off multi-level railcars and into assigned staging areas. You will also help prepare railcars for loading and unloading by opening doors, positioning bridge plates, adjusting decks and ramps, and removing vehicle securement equipment.
Previous railroad experience is not required. We will train qualified employees on our procedures and equipment.
What a Typical Day Looks Like
You will spend much of your shift driving different makes and models of vehicles through the rail facility and into assigned parking locations. At other times, you will be helping prepare the railcars so those vehicles can be loaded or unloaded safely.
This is not just a driving job. It is physical work performed around railcars, vehicles, ladders, ramps, and industrial equipment.
What You'll Do
Safely drive vehicles on and off multi-level railcars and move them to assigned staging or parking areas
Help open and close railcar end doors, raise and lower decks, and position bridge plates and adjustable ramps
Remove and properly store vehicle securement devices used during rail transportation
Follow assigned routes, customer procedures, and damage-prevention standards while immediately reporting vehicle damage or unsafe conditions
What We're Looking For
A valid driver's license and the ability to safely operate a variety of passenger vehicles
Dependable attendance and the ability to follow detailed driving and loading instructions
Comfort working outdoors around moving vehicles and active rail equipment
A safety-focused attitude and willingness to work as part of a team
The Work Environment
This position is performed primarily outdoors in an active rail and vehicle-handling environment.
Employees must be comfortable working in heat, cold, rain, dust, and wind. The job includes frequent walking, standing, bending, reaching, and climbing ladders to heights exceeding 16 feet. Required personal protective equipment must be worn while working in operational areas.
