The Senior Manager, Patent Information Scientist (Chemist) is a key member of Eisai's Intellectual Property team, providing strategic scientific, patent, and competitive intelligence support to advance the company's research, development, business development, and intellectual property objectives. As the primary U.S.-based chemistry information scientist, this role is responsible for designing and executing complex patent, scientific literature, and competitive intelligence searches and analyses that support patent preparation, patentability evaluations, freedom-to-operate assessments, due diligence activities, competitive intelligence initiatives, and patent litigation matters. The position collaborates closely with scientists, patent attorneys, and business stakeholders to identify relevant information and assess technology landscapes to support informed decision-making.

The successful candidate will possess deep expertise in chemical structure, Markush, and reaction searching. The Senior Manager will independently develop and execute complex chemical patent, scientific, and competitive intelligence research to inform high-value business and legal decisions. Working closely with IP attorneys, scientists, business professionals, and commercial stakeholders, this role will help shape intellectual property strategy and support the protection and commercialization of Eisai innovations.

In addition, the Senior Manager will contribute to the evaluation and implementation of emerging information resources to enhance organizational capabilities, improve efficiency, and expand the strategic value delivered by the Patent Information Scientist function. 

Essential Functions

  • Independently conduct comprehensive patent, scientific literature, and drug pipeline searches to support intellectual property, research, and business decisions.
  • Work with IP attorneys, scientists, and business colleagues to define search needs to communicate findings clearly.
  • Conduct complex chemical structure, Markush, and reaction searches using appropriate patent and scientific databases.
  • Perform patent status research, monitoring, and alerts for key products, competitors, and technology areas.
  • Evaluate new search platforms, databases, analytics tools, and AI-enabled resources to improve quality, efficiency, and capabilities.
  • Provide ad hoc assistance on matters such as running trademark searches, obtaining articles, facilitating access to information resources, and resolving technical issues.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in Chemistry is preferred. Candidates holding a B.S./B.A. in Chemistry with equivalent research experience, Qualified Patent Information Professional (QPIP) certification, or USPTO registration will also be considered.
  • 6–10+ years of experience in chemical patent searching, including at least 5 years supporting pharmaceutical research, development, and intellectual property activities.
  • Ability to review scientific and patent documents with strong comprehension of content to identify relevant documents.
  • Demonstrated expertise conducting chemical structure, Markush, and reaction searches, using the STN platform, including Chemical Abstracts, Registry, Marpat, and Derwent Markush databases.
  • Experience with competitive intelligence searching and analytics tools such as Adis, Citeline, Cortellis, and BizInt.
  • Experience conducting legal research using LexisNexis.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.

Eisai Salary Transparency Language:

The annual base salary range for the Senior Manager, Patent Information Scientist (Chemist) is from :$124,700-$163,700

Under current guidelines, this position is eligible to participate in : Eisai Inc. Annual Incentive Plan.

Final pay determinations will depend on various factors including but not limited to experience level, education, knowledge, and skills.
