Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Shop Foreman is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and coordination of McGeorge Contracting's heavy civil maintenance shop. Reporting to the Shop Superintendent, this position provides hands-on leadership to mechanics, welders, helpers, and other shop personnel while ensuring repairs and maintenance are completed safely, efficiently, and to company standards. The Shop Foreman helps prioritize and assign work, coordinates equipment repairs, troubleshoots mechanical issues, oversees parts and shop inventory, supports employee training and development, and works closely with field maintenance personnel to meet operational needs.

Qualified candidates should have extensive experience in a heavy equipment maintenance environment and previous experience leading mechanics, welders, or other skilled maintenance personnel. A minimum of 10 years of applicable shop experience is required. |
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of mechanics, welders, helpers, and other shop personnel.
- Prioritize and assign repair, maintenance, welding, and fabrication work based on equipment needs and operational priorities.
- Oversee repairs and maintenance of heavy construction equipment and related machinery.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical problems on Caterpillar and other manufacturers' equipment.
- Coordinate the purchase of repair parts and materials needed to complete maintenance, welding, and fabrication projects.
- Maintain and coordinate appropriate shop inventory, including parts, filters, tires, supplies, and other maintenance materials.
- Coordinate shop maintenance activities with field mechanics and field operations as needs arise.
- Ensure mechanics and helpers receive appropriate instruction, training, and support to complete work correctly and efficiently.
- Conduct weekly safety meetings and actively reinforce safe work practices and a zero-incident safety culture.
- Monitor repair progress, equipment downtime, labor requirements, and repair costs.
- Analyze repair costs and repair times and provide recommendations to the Shop Superintendent regarding maintenance and repair decisions.
- Assist with equipment rebuild and remanufacturing programs as applicable.
- Ensure work areas, tools, equipment, and shop operations are maintained in a safe and organized manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Shop Superintendent.
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of experience working in a heavy equipment maintenance, repair, or similar equipment shop environment.
- Strong working knowledge of heavy construction equipment maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting.
- Experience diagnosing mechanical problems on Caterpillar and/or comparable heavy equipment.
- Previous experience supervising, leading, or directing mechanics or other skilled maintenance employees.
- Ability to prioritize multiple equipment repairs and effectively assign work to shop personnel.
- Knowledge of parts, filters, tires, components, and other materials commonly used in heavy equipment maintenance operations.
- Ability to evaluate repair costs, labor requirements, downtime, and repair-versus-replacement considerations.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety and the ability to enforce company safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively with mechanics, supervisors, field personnel, vendors, and management.
- Ability to train, coach, and develop employees with varying levels of experience.
