Veterinary Charge Nurse – Emergency & Critical Care

$30–$36/hour | Buckeye, AZ | Full-Time | Day Shift | No Overnights

Schedule: Choose a 4/10 or 3/12 schedule. Day-shift hours will be determined based on business needs. One weekend day required. No overnight shifts.

Arizona Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center (AVECCC) is hiring an experienced Veterinary Charge Nurse to provide leadership and operational support for our high-volume, 24-hour emergency and critical care veterinary hospital in Buckeye, AZ. This is a leadership opportunity for an experienced veterinary professional who enjoys developing teams, coaching employees, improving hospital operations, and supporting high-quality patient and client care.

In Your Day-to-Day You Will

Develop & Lead the Team

  • Serve as a leader and role model for veterinary technicians, assistants, client service staff, laboratory technicians, kennel assistants, and other hospital support team members

  • Partner with the Training Coordinator to ensure new and existing employees receive effective onboarding and training

  • Participate in interviewing and selecting new support staff

  • Support employee leveling and career advancement by reviewing development benchmarks and identifying growth opportunities

  • Conduct mid-year and annual performance reviews for support staff

  • Identify performance gaps and partner with employees and hospital leadership on coaching, corrective action, and development plans

  • Follow up on coaching and training to ensure expectations are being implemented

  • Document employee training and coaching activities

  • Develop and teach department-specific curriculum for ARISE Academy

Build Communication & Engagement

  • Conduct beginning-of-shift huddles to establish priorities and ensure effective team communication

  • Serve as a key communication link between hospital leadership and support staff

  • Conduct regular check-ins with team members and participate in Leadership Team meetings

  • Help identify opportunities to improve communication, teamwork, and hospital processes

  • Recognize employee strengths, development opportunities, and signs of disengagement

  • Proactively support employee retention by fostering a positive, accountable, and growth-oriented culture

  • Encourage professional development and participation in continuing education and leadership opportunities

  • Lead by example and promote a respectful, collaborative workplace

Support Hospital Operations

  • Monitor hospital departments and work areas to ensure staff responsibilities are being completed appropriately

  • Ensure veterinary medical techniques, hospital policies, procedures, and service standards are consistently followed

  • Reinforce exceptional customer service and help resolve client concerns and complaints when appropriate

  • Partner with the Leadership Team to identify operational challenges and implement practical solutions

  • Participate in the development and implementation of hospital policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs)

  • Work with the inventory specialist to maintain appropriate departmental inventory levels while supporting budget goals

  • Ensure the department follows OSHA requirements and hospital safety standards

  • Help maintain seamless day-to-day operations in a fast-paced emergency and critical care environment

What We’re Looking For

  • Previous experience in a veterinary emergency, critical care, or specialty hospital

  • Veterinary technician or veterinary nursing background with demonstrated leadership experience

  • Experience mentoring, training, coaching, or supervising veterinary support staff

  • Strong understanding of veterinary clinical procedures and patient care

  • Ability to provide constructive feedback and address performance concerns professionally

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a high-volume veterinary environment

  • Solution-oriented approach with a focus on continuous improvement

  • Ability to lead by example and build an engaged, accountable team

  • Commitment to professional development and continuing education

  • Veterinary technician license or certification preferred
