The SBU Driver Mechanic performs vehicle mechanical work beginning with basic assembly and/or removal of parts, minor repairs such as replacing fuel systems, unit connections and other components.​
Duties increase with time and experience on the job. Most advanced work may include fabricating experimental parts and test fixtures and working from blueprints/drawings. Other responsibilities include driving test vehicles at various speeds on varying road conditions.​

Weekend overtime is required for this position.​
Basic Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 1 year of mechanic experience​
- Basic knowledge of mathematics, reading and writing​
- Organizational skills​
- Mechanical skills and knowledge of mechanical systems​
- Welding Experience​
- Troubleshooting skills​
- Ability to use and understand computerized diagnostic equipment​
- Automotive background​

Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate degree​
- Apprenticeship or internship in automotive mechanics​
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified​
- Specialty certifications​
