Patient Champion: Remote Pharmacy Student Position

Grapefruit Health · Remote, U.S. · Part-time, Flexible · Pharmacy Students Only

ABOUT GRAPEFRUIT HEALTH

Grapefruit Health is a healthcare services company on a mission to solve the growing staffing shortage in healthcare by putting tomorrow's clinicians to work today.

We train and manage clinical students to conduct remote, telephonic patient interactions using our purpose-built software. The result? Patients receive timely support, healthcare organizations extend their capacity, and you gain meaningful patient communication experience before you graduate.

As a PharmD student, you'll have the opportunity to apply the communication, patient-centered care, and medication knowledge you're developing in the classroom while gaining real-world experience connecting with patients.

THE ROLE

As a GFH Patient Champion, you'll conduct structured, phone-based interactions with patients on behalf of our partner healthcare organizations.

Using our platform and established protocols, you'll check in with patients, complete assessments, support care-gap closure, and escalate concerns to licensed clinical supervisors when appropriate. Depending on the program, conversations may involve medication use and adherence, preventive care, chronic conditions, post-discharge follow-up, and other patient health needs.

All interactions are conducted by phone, no video or in-person contact is required. You can work remotely from a quiet, private location in the U.S.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Complete a minimum of 6 hours of patient outreach per week on a schedule you build around your PharmD coursework

  • Conduct structured patient outreach, assessments, and wellness check-ins using The Grove, Grapefruit Health's platform

  • Engage patients in conversations related to their healthcare needs, which may include medication adherence, preventive care, chronic disease management, and follow-up care

  • Practice clear, patient-centered communication while helping patients better navigate their healthcare needs

  • Document interaction outcomes accurately within the platform

  • Escalate patient safety concerns and clinical questions to a licensed clinical supervisor in real time

  • Maintain strict HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality at all times

  • Participate in onboarding training and ongoing team check-ins

TRAINING & SUPERVISION

All new student hires complete an onboarding program lasting 14 days or less, covering our platform, patient communication frameworks, HIPAA requirements, and the protocols used during patient outreach.

Once active, you'll be supported by our Clinical Leadership Team, who are available during your shifts to provide guidance and manage patient escalations.

This role is designed to complement, not replace, the education and experiential training you receive as a PharmD student.

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN
  • Meaningful patient experience before graduation

  • More confidence communicating with real patients

  • Experience discussing healthcare and navigating patient needs in a structured setting

  • A deeper understanding of the barriers that can affect medication adherence and patient outcomes

  • Exposure to healthcare technology and remote patient engagement

  • Professional experience you can add to your resume and discuss in future interviews

  • Flexible, paid work that fits around your PharmD program

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • Must be based in the U.S. and a U.S. citizen

  • Must be actively enrolled in an accredited PharmD program at a university in the U.S.

  • Strong interest in patient care and improving the patient experience

  • Strong verbal communication skills or a genuine desire to develop them

  • An interest in applying your pharmacy education beyond the classroom

  • Comfortable working independently in a remote environment

  • Able to commit to a minimum of 6 hours per week

  • Access to a compatible computer and cell phone with SMS capabilities

  • A quiet, private workspace free of background noise and distractions

WHY PHARMACY STUDENTS?

Pharmacists are among the most accessible healthcare professionals, and strong patient communication is at the heart of the profession.

As a Patient Champion, you'll have the opportunity to strengthen the skills that matter throughout your pharmacy career: listening to patients, communicating clearly, understanding barriers to care, and recognizing when additional clinical support is needed.

You'll gain experience working with real patients while developing the confidence to bring your clinical knowledge into patient-centered conversations.

Required with Submission
  • Two-minute or less video explaining why you would be a good fit for Grapefruit Health and why you think learning how to perform care telephonically is important to prepare you to become a clinician. These do not need to be very formal and are mostly for us to evaluate your communication style. Be yourself and have fun with it!
