What You’ll Do

The Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Cancer Registry program and ensuring compliance with the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer (CoC) standards. This role involves reviewing patient records and diagnostic information to accurately analyze and abstract tumor data. The ODS collects, reports, and maintains case-finding and follow-up data within the cancer registry database. In addition, this position plays a key role in supporting and maintaining CoC accreditation through active collaboration with the multidisciplinary cancer care team.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Candidates who do not meet the educational requirements at the time of hire may complete the required coursework, including the NCRA-accredited Certificate Program (if applicable), while employed, provided all educational requirements are completed within two (2) years of hire.

    • Associate's degree or equivalent (minimum of 60 college credit hours).

    • Must have completed one of the following:

    • At least 6 credit hours in Human Anatomy and Physiology; or

    • Successful completion of an NCRA-accredited Cancer Registry Certificate Program.

  • Certified Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) from the National Cancer Registrar’s Association credential required.

    • Candidates who meet all educational requirements at the time of hire must obtain the ODS credential within two (2) years of hire.

    • Candidates who are hired while completing the required educational requirements must obtain the ODS credential within three (3) years of hire, provided all required education is completed within two (2) years of hire.
