The Post and Courier, South Carolina's premier news source, is seeking a highly motivated college intern to work with our Audience Team and learn all facets of our digital engagement strategies aimed at increasing brand awareness and developing creative tactics to build lasting relationships within the communities we serve.

Responsibilities

  • Work with our Audience Engagement Team members across the state.
  • Engage with our audiences online and during in-person events, including AMAs, social media takeovers, and more.
  • Execute social media initiatives across our multiple platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok.
  • Create video content both from provided video from reporters and through original coverage.
  • Check stories for proper SEO, headlines, links, recirculation pieces, etc.
  • Use analytics to make real-time digital decisions, such as sending a push notification for a story that is being widely read.
  • Help write and edit newsletters for our Upstate markets.
  • Assist reporters with video, social and engagement strategies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain a weekly journal of activity and attend check-in meetings as assigned.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Strong interest in journalism.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and within a collaborative, team environment.
  • Understanding of website analytics used to guide decisions, using platforms such as Google Analytics and Marfeel.
  • Background or understanding of HTML.
  • Basic video editing skills, particularly as it relates to social videos.
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices.
  • Ability to multi-task and quickly troubleshoot.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Incredible attention to detail.
  • Capability of multi-tasking and balancing several projects at once.

Requirements, minimum education level and experience

  • Currently enrolled at Furman University. 
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing or related field.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills with excellent follow through.
  • Reliable access to internet service.
