Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Senior Nuclear Systems Engineer. This position is a full-time opportunity located remotely.

Battelle is seeking a Senior Nuclear Systems Engineer to lead the design, analysis, and integration of complex nuclear systems. This role serves as a technical authority on nuclear systems engineering, guiding multidisciplinary teams through the full project lifecycle — from concept development and requirements definition through design, licensing support, testing, and deployment.

The successful candidate will bring deep technical expertise combined with the judgment and communication skills needed to advise program leadership, mentor junior engineers, and represent Battelle before clients and regulatory bodies.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Nuclear Systems Engineer, the selected individual will serve as a technical authority across the full nuclear systems engineering lifecycle. Responsibilities may include:

  • Lead systems engineering efforts for nuclear reactor, fuel cycle, radiological, or related critical infrastructure programs, including requirements development, architecture design, and integration of subsystems
  • Interface directly with government sponsors, regulatory agencies, and commercial clients to communicate technical findings, defend design decisions, and support licensing and audit activities
  • Perform and oversee safety analyses, reliability assessments, and risk evaluations in accordance with applicable nuclear safety codes, standards, and regulatory requirements (e.g., NRC, DOE, ASME)
  • Develop technical basis documentation, including system design descriptions, safety analysis reports, licensing submittals, and engineering change packages
  • Serve as a technical lead on proposals and program execution, defining scope, schedule, and budget for nuclear systems engineering tasks
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams spanning nuclear, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and controls, and human factors engineering to ensure integrated system performance
  • Ensure compliance with quality assurance programs, configuration management processes, and applicable nuclear industry standards throughout all phases of engineering work
  • Provide senior-level technical review and mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers, fostering technical growth and ensuring the quality of deliverables

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline; advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive nuclear systems engineering experience, including significant experience in reactor systems, fuel cycle facilities, or nuclear energy programs
  • Demonstrated expertise in nuclear safety analysis, systems engineering methodologies, and applicable regulatory frameworks (10 CFR, DOE Orders, ASME codes, or equivalent)
  • Proven track record leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and managing technical deliverables on complex, schedule-driven programs
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing technical reports and presenting to government sponsors, regulators, or executive stakeholders
  • Occasional travel to program sites, client facilities, and regulatory meetings required; some tasks may require access to controlled or classified environments
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy or Department of Defense security clearance; U.S. citizenship required

Working Conditions

This position is based in a Battelle office, home office or client site environment, with occasional travel to program sites, client facilities, and regulatory meetings. Some tasks may require access to controlled or classified environments and adherence to associated security protocols.
