JOB SUMMARY
Works under general direction to provide responsible and skilled technical assistance in performing assignments requiring experience and good knowledge of techniques and practices related to particular field of medical and scientific research. 

The Nam Laboratory seeks a motivated Research Technician II / Research Assistant I to support studies in RNA biology, RNA chemical modifications, and mechanistic biochemistry in the broader field of gene regulation and cancer biology. The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing projects through independent execution of molecular biology and biochemical experiments while supporting overall laboratory operations.

This role is well-suited for individuals seeking rigorous research experience in an academic biomedical setting.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA purification, PCR, cloning, gel electrophoresis)
  • Assist with protein expression and purification
  • Conduct RNA biochemistry experiments, including in vitro transcription and enzymatic assays
  • Prepare reagents and maintain organized laboratory records
  • Assist with data analysis and documentation
  • Maintain laboratory inventory and ensure compliance with safety regulations

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, or related field
  • 1–2 years of relevant laboratory experience (academic or industry) preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in basic molecular biology techniques
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Required

  • Education
    Master's Degree with major coursework in field of assignment and no experience required or 
    Bachelor's Degree with major coursework in field of assignment or 
    Completion of 2 years of college with emphasis in coursework in field of assignment or 
    High School Diploma or GED equivalent 
     
  • Experience
    1 year Research experience at level of Research Technician or equivalent with Bachelor's degree or 
    4 years Research experience including two years at level of Research Technician or equivalent with 2 years of college or 
    6 years Research experience with High School Diploma or GED equivalent including 
    2 years at level of Research Technician or equivalent. 
     


JOB DUTIES

  • Performs more difficult scientific and medical research work in science area such as biology, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific field.
  • Constructs, assembles, and operates laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  • Records and evaluates data obtained from work assignments for use in scientific papers.
  • Collaborates with supervisor or other research personnel in preparation of scientific papers for publication.
  • Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning procedures and implementation.
  • Collects and organizes research data for project reports.
  • May plan for, and provide working supervision to, work of Research Technicians or other laboratory personnel of lower grade.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
