Controller

Job Description

This Controller role leads the daily activities of the accounting function in a complex, privately held environment, with a strong emphasis on balance sheet integrity, intercompany settlements, eliminations, and consolidations across domestic and international entities. The position ensures accurate, compliant, and timely financial reporting, drives a predictable monthly close, and plays a key role in an ongoing Oracle Fusion implementation while mentoring and developing the accounting team.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily activities of the accounting department with a focus on the balance sheet, intercompany settlements, eliminations, and consolidations across domestic and international entities.
  • Ensure proper accounting treatment of all intercompany activity and allocations by partnering with domestic and global subsidiaries so that intercompany transactions are properly supported and meet GAAP, internal control, and tax requirements.
  • Own and drive a timely, accurate, and predictable monthly close process, minimizing surprises for leadership and ensuring high-quality financial results.
  • Review and analyze account reconciliations and bank reconciliations prepared by the accounting team, ensuring that material items are identified, escalated, and resolved promptly.
  • Ensure that monthly close activities and financial statements conform to company policies and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Apply multi-currency expertise, including revaluation, translation, and foreign exchange risk considerations, to ensure accurate financial reporting across international entities.
  • Support parent company reporting requirements by preparing and delivering accurate financial information on time.
  • Prepare and communicate financial information and supporting schedules for preliminary and year-end audits and reviews.
  • Educate, mentor, and develop accounting staff on technical accounting topics and professional skills, actively investing in team growth, stability, and capability.
  • Support and contribute to the ongoing Oracle Fusion implementation and the transition away from legacy processes, including addressing reconciliation backlogs and process disruptions.
  • Partner closely with financial operations, tax, accounts payable, payroll, and operating company partners to ensure alignment and effective financial operations.
  • Advise staff on the appropriate handling and accounting treatment of non-routine and complex reporting transactions.
  • Provide support and insight to leadership as needed, including explaining the mechanics of the close, balance sheet, and intercompany processes in detail.
  • Personally own key accounting processes, including the close, balance sheet, and intercompany activities, rather than delegating them entirely, and ensure robust documentation and controls.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • 8+ years of general ledger and financial reporting experience.
  • 4+ years of supervisory experience, including managing managers.
  • Hands-on experience with intercompany eliminations, consolidations, and international entities.
  • Strong technical GAAP foundation and the ability to apply GAAP to complex transactions.
  • Proven experience owning the monthly close process, balance sheet, and intercompany accounting, with the ability to walk through the mechanics in detail.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills for analysis, reconciliations, and reporting.
  • Experience with accounting functions such as general ledger, reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with internal controls and tax requirements in relation to intercompany activities.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and interpret account and bank reconciliations and identify material issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop an accounting team in a dynamic environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • CPA certification or MBA is a plus.
  • Oracle Fusion experience or comparable enterprise ERP experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting or navigating an ERP implementation or post-implementation environment.
  • Multi-currency experience, including revaluation, translation, and foreign exchange risk management.
  • Oracle Fusion or Hyperion experience is a plus.
  • Experience working in a large, complex organization with parent company reporting requirements.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment undergoing system changes, process improvement, and reconciliation clean-up.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with financial operations, tax, accounts payable, payroll, and operating company partners.
  • Proactive mindset that views challenges such as implementation disruptions and reconciliation backlogs as opportunities to improve processes and strengthen the function.
