Scope Summary

The Senior Editorial Specialist is responsible for providing editorial support as part of the CompTIA Exam Services team by performing all stages of editorial review for certification exam content, as well as contributing to project planning, escalating and solving challenges, and driving editorial process improvements with leadership guidance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Copyedit, proofread, and perform QC reviews of exam items and related content/media at multiple stages of the exam development process, often taking the lead on the completion of Final QC reviews.
  • Provide input on project schedules and assignment deadlines as requested by team leadership.
  • Screen all content for language that may be perceived as discriminatory or offensive and edit with an eye for readability and plain language.
  • Adhere to the editorial workflow and complete all editorial reviews by the assigned deadlines.
  • Follow grammar, spelling, punctuation, consistency, style, and clarity standards, and adhere to the house style guidelines.
  • Report issues that surface during editorial/QC reviews and present potential solutions to team leadership.
  • Suggest editorial process improvements to create efficiencies and improve the quality of work output and then take the lead to implement any changes with the oversight of team leadership.
  • Provide training and guidance to junior team members as assigned/requested.
  • Assist with other editorial, administrative, and communication-related tasks as needed to support the goals and objectives of the Exam Services team.
  • Participate in virtual and in-person exam development workshops by facilitating item review sessions with subject matter experts as assigned. (In-person workshops will be held at the CompTIA HQ office.)

Key Performance Indicators

  • Accurately edit content to ensure delivery of high-quality, technically sound certification exam content.
  • Lead or co-lead 2-4 approved process improvements, updates, or small projects annually.
  • Lead productive item review discussions with subject matter experts during exam development workshops.
  • Identify areas for prioritization and resource re-allocation as needed; otherwise, meet editorial deadlines as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of and skilled in technical Editing.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with team members and subject matter experts.
  • Proven track record of managing time efficiently, keeping multiple assignments moving along concurrently, and delivering assigned work on time.
  • Aptitude for taking the lead on small projects and meeting clearly defined project goals.
  • Flexibility and willingness to adjust focus and priorities when necessary.
  • Capacity to apply house style guidelines while editing but also to incorporate other styles and editorial preferences as appropriate.
  • High comfort level with using technology and learning new applications.
  • Willingness to collaborate with team members.
  • Self-starter with strong initiative, curiosity, and an interest in learning and growing within the role.
  • Experience editing IT-related or other technical content is strongly preferred.
  • Intermediate-to-advanced skills using Microsoft products, Adobe Pro, Adobe InDesign, and Smartsheet are preferred.
  • Knowledge of exam development best practices is a plus, as are strong facilitation skills.
  • A minimum of three years in a technical copyediting, proofreading, or writing role is required

Education and/or Experience

  • Degree preferred but not required for the role
  • 3+ years of direct experience in related field
