Introduction 

Working with our reinsurance team in North America you’ll learn more about applying business analytics, ML/AI, and creative data visualization to tackle complex problems for clients and the insurance industry as a whole, risk mitigation solutions and doing real work for Howden Re's current and prospective clients. 

What you’ll be doing 

Reinsurance is a complex world; the easiest way to think about it is that it’s insurance for the insurers. Working with our teams,you’ll help insurance companies protect their futures, and the people they insure. 

The Howden Re Decision Support Team (Modeling and Analytics) is unmatched in the industry in facilitating catastrophe reinsurance placements while also being integrally embedded within our clients' operations.  As a Catastrophe R&D Intern, you will collaborate both internally and externally with analysts and senior executives.    

On a day-to-day basis you’ll: 

  • Assist in analysis projects under guidance of senior catastrophe modelers. 

  • Gather, organize and review data relevant to catastrophe model validation. 

  • Perform analyses to extract data sets that can be used to calculate the client's risk exposure. 

  • Assist senior R&D team members in preparing and formatting summaries, presentations, and reports in order to convey potential risk and loss results for clients. 

  • Research and summarize industry publications and scientific papers of specific or regional perils in order to provide additional sources of information used for analyses and client reports 

Who we’re looking for 

You’ll be working towards a Bachelor’s or advanceddegree inin Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Meteorology, or similar analytical / science major.You’ll be able to clearly communicate your thoughts and ideas both in writing and in person. And be able to handle multiple tasks and projects at the same time in a client service, deadline-driven environment. 

You will: 

  • Be actively pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Meteorology, or similar analytical / science major 

  • Have a GPAof 3.0+ 

  • Have a high achieving academic record in program major and summer internships or other work experience 

  • Be proficient in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint 

  • Possess the ability to work independently or within a team based on work demands 

  • Pay close attention todetail, because every small detail matters 

  • Have a keen ability to organize 

  • Legally authorized to work in the US
