Description

Job Summary:

We are seeking a Finance Director – Project Controls and Construction to lead cost control, budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning across our construction project portfolio. This role bridges field operations and corporate finance — combining hands-on project controls expertise (cost tracking, schedule integration, change management) with FP&A-level rigor (variance analysis, rolling forecasts, capital planning, and executive reporting). The ideal candidate has spent their career at the intersection of construction (or another operationally complex project management) and corporate finance and is comfortable translating field-level cost data into strategic financial insight for senior leadership.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Project Controls

  • Own project cost control systems across a portfolio of active construction projects, including budget setup, cost coding,
  • commitment tracking, and change order management.
  • Partner with project managers and superintendents to monitor cost-to-complete, earned value, and schedule performance
  • (EVM/CPI/SPI).
  • Review and validate pay applications, subcontractor billings, and cost forecasts for accuracy and completeness.
  • Identify cost trends, risks, and variances early, and drive corrective action plans with project teams.
  • Maintain and improve WBS structures, cost codes, and reporting templates for consistency across projects.
  • Lead monthly project cost reviews (job cost meetings) with PMs, executives, and finance stakeholders.

FP&A / Financial Planning

  • Develop and maintain rolling forecasts and annual budgets for the project portfolio, consolidating bottom-up project data into company-level financial plans.
  • Build and refine financial models for cash flow projection, capital expenditure planning, and revenue recognition (percentageof- completion).
  • Analyze budget-to-actual variances at the project and portfolio level; present findings with clear narratives to executive leadership.
  • Support quarterly forecasting cycles, long-range planning (3–5 year), and annual budgeting processes in partnership with corporate FP&A.
  • Prepare board-level and executive reporting packages, including KPIs, margin analysis, and portfolio risk summaries.
  • Partner with accounting on WIP (work-in-progress) schedules, revenue recognition, and month-end close as it relates to project financials.

Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary financial liaison between field operations, project management, accounting, and executive leadership.
  • Mentor and develop junior project controls and cost analysts.
  • Drive standardization and continuous improvement of project controls processes, tools, and reporting cadences.
  • Support pre-construction efforts including budget development, risk assessment, and financial feasibility analysis for new projects.
  • Other duties as needed or assigned.
