What You’ll Do

As a member of our Utilities team, you will be part of a crucial city operation that supports infrastructure growth and keeps essential services running smoothly every day. Work assignments may include:
Utility Administration
This involves managing administrative tasks such as handling Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and overseeing the permitting process. You'll ensure that all documentation is accurate and up-to-date.
Development and Field Inspections
You'll be responsible for reviewing development plans and conducting field inspections to ensure projects adhere to municipal standards. This requires attention to detail and a thorough understanding of regulations.
Data Collection and Asset Management
In this role, you will collect data and manage assets as part of utility compliance programs and capital projects. Your efforts will help maintain the integrity and efficiency of the utility systems.
Customer Service and Collaboration
Providing excellent customer service is key, as you'll address inquiries and concerns about utility services. You'll also collaborate with utility staff, contractors, developers, and regulatory agencies to support water and wastewater systems effectively.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • 1–3 years of experience in utilities, public works, engineering support, construction, infrastructure management, environmental services, or a related field preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license with an acceptable driving record that meets City criteria

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree or technical training in a related field.
  • Experience in utility inspections or environmental compliance.
  • Familiarity with grease interceptors and backflow devices.
  • Experience with data tracking systems or inspection software.
  • Understanding of local government operations or public works functions.
  • Relevant certificates in water distribution, wastewater collection, or utility inspection.

Work Environment

Work takes place in various settings, including offices, fields, construction sites, utility facilities, and outdoor environments. Field assignments may expose employees to a range of conditions, such as changing weather patterns, uneven terrain, traffic hazards, construction activities, utility structures, grease interceptors, and wastewater-related environments, as well as noise, odors, and dust. Due to these factors, employees may be required to wear personal protective equipment and adhere to established safety protocols. Additionally, there may be occasions when work requires responding outside of regular business hours, particularly during utility emergencies, service interruptions, or other operational demands.
