Job Description:

L3Harris is seeking a Lead, Mechanical Engineering to provide technical and organizational leadership for the development, integration, delivery, and support of Airborne EO/IR solutions.  This hybrid management / technical contributor role includes functional leadership of the mechanical engineering team supporting the full system lifecycle as well as practice as an engineer directly contributing to mission-critical programs ensuring alignment with customer needs, contractual obligations, and organizational objectives.  They will work closely with cross functional members in engineering, operations, manufacturing, & program management to design, develop, build & test high performance solutions.  The ideal candidate brings strong people leadership, technical expertise, and demonstrated success leading the mechanical engineering team in a highly dynamic aerospace and defense environment.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Lead a mechanical engineering team in support of program, functional, and business objectives
  • Provide day-to-day direction, prioritization, and coordination of engineering activities across organizations
  • Serve as a technical contributor to Airborne Solutions programs, applying engineering expertise to design, development, integration, verification, troubleshooting, and technical execution activities
  • Translate customer and program requirements into executable engineering plans, deliverables, staffing needs, and performance expectations
  • Ensure engineering work products satisfy technical requirements, quality standards, contractual obligations, and program milestones
  • Partner with business leadership to balance technical execution, staffing, cost, schedule, and risk
  • Support technical planning, basis of estimate development, proposal activities, and resource forecasting for new and existing efforts
  • Review and approve technical approaches, engineering deliverables, and key decisions in accordance with organizational processes
  • Support cross-functional collaboration among engineering, operations, quality, supply chain, manufacturing, and program office teams to resolve issues and maintain execution alignment.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop engineering personnel through technical guidance, performance management, and career development.
  • Support workforce planning, recruiting, retention, succession planning, and skills development to maintain organizational capability and capacity.
  • Support design reviews, technical reviews, readiness reviews, customer meetings, and internal status reviews
  • Promote a culture of accountability, inclusion, continuous improvement, and technical excellence.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, engineering processes, regulatory requirements, and customer commitments
  • Design, develop, modify and evaluate complicated and difficult mechanical and electro-mechanical components, sub-systems and systems.
  • Prepare design specifications, analyses and recommendations for presentation and approval through a formal review process.
  • Analyze, develop, and recommend design approaches to meet production requirements for new or improved products and/or processes.
  • Interface with optical, electrical, software and system engineers, providing engineering analysis (structural/thermal) and CAD design from product inception to released fabrication drawings. 
  • Provide support for product development and proposals for conceptual CAD layouts and cost estimation.
  • Complete documentation and BOMs to support life cycle of new or improved designs.
  • Provide support for existing product designs through the production cycle by incorporating engineering change orders (ECO).

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 9 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.
  • Active DoD Secret Clearance.

 

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Progressive engineering experience, including exposure to defense, aerospace, avionics, mission systems, C4ISR, weapons, space, radar, communications, or other complex regulated environments
  • Leadership experience managing technical teams, engineering organizations, or major engineering work scopes
  • Ability to balance strategic technical leadership with day-to-day execution in a fast-paced, high-consequence Aerospace & Defense environment
  • Experience with requirements decomposition, functional analysis, architecture development, interface management, integration, verification, validation, and configuration control
  • Development experience involving complex EO/IR systems such as optics, visible/infrared detector arrays, detector cryogenic coolers, digital/analog video, signal processing electronics, solid-state lasers, pointing and stabilization instruments, control algorithms, search/track algorithms and image reconstruction/exploitation algorithms
  • Strong interpersonal, facilitation, written, and verbal communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with the ability to manage priorities, resolve conflicts, and meet deadlines
  • SolidWorks modeling and drafting experience.
  • Basic knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and ANSI Y14.5.
  • Knowledge of analysis techniques including linear finite element (FE) stress modeling, heat transfer, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
  • Experience with advanced shock and vibration analysis and design for fatigue.
  • System development considering machine design and theory of mechanisms, thermal design considerations, and materials selection for demanding environments and applications.
  • Knowledge of mechanical part fabrication processes.
  • Experience in designs of electric motors, gears, bearings, and flexures
  • Electronics packaging knowledge
  • Stabilization, guidance and control
  • Hardware integration and troubleshooting
  • Strong mechanical and geo-spatial comprehension skills
  • Control system modeling using Matlab/Simulink

 

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in New York state is $106,000 - $197,000. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
