Job DetailsJob Location: Gettysburg TLC - Gettysburg, PA 17325Salary Range: $18.00 - $18.00 HourlyPosition Summary The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides “hands on” direct service to people with intellectual/developmental disabilities. They are responsible for carrying out the day to duties necessary for the program to operate smoothly and to implement services in a manner consistent with the agency’s mission, vision, and values. Schedules include day/evening/nights, weekends, and company recognized holidays. Essential Job Functions: 1) Review and Documentation a) DSPs must ensure they are reviewing and understanding all documentation and/or plans an individual may have in place. It is crucial for the health and safety of all parties that this information is acknowledged and documented as necessary. Examples included but are not limited to: • Review all MAR’s (Medication Administration Records) and all EHR (Electronic Health Record) for the individual(s) that are being supported. • Review any Behavior Support plans, Restrictive Plans, or SEEN plans • Review Protocols and Trackers • Complete Daily Shift Notes and any other Documentation that may be required. 2) Administer medication as ordered by a physician a) DSPs must ensure that individuals receive their medication as prescribed by their physician. DSPs will work with individuals to maximize their independence regarding medication administration. Examples include but are not limited to: • Administering medication within identified time frames and as ordered by physicians. • Correctly documenting medication on the MAR (Medication Administration Record). • Ensuring all MAR’s (Medication Administration Record) and EHR (Electronic Health Record) documentation is thoroughly and accurately completed. • Count and document on all medications including controlled substances • Ensure medications are stored properly and kept in a locked area. • Monitor consumers for side effects of medication errors. • Document all medication errors. 3) Maximize Safety of Others a) DSPs work in the program and have frequent direct contact with the individuals. DSPs must be observant for safety issues, correcting what they can and reporting what they cannot correct to management. Examples include but are not limited to: • Closely supervising consumers in the community who do not have traffic safety skills. • Keep hot water temperature below 120 degrees Fahrenheit. • Conducting and recording fire drills. • Monitor and replace smoke detector batteries. • Make sure seat belts are worn when in vehicles. • Manage snow on sidewalks. • Report any suspicion of abuse or neglect. • Follow universal precautions and exposure control plan. 4) Meet the needs of people receiving services a) All services provided are individualized based on the needs of the consumers. Because individuals’ needs vary, what is provided is dependent on each individual’s unique circumstances. Some people may need hands on assistance, while others may need only supervision or reminders to carry out tasks. Examples include but are not limited to: • Assist with bathing, dressing, tooth brushing, and other personal care activities. • Accompany residents to medical/ dental appointments and ensure recommendations are recorded and followed. • Administer and record medications • Prepare and serve nutritional meals. • Encourage recreational activities based on the person’s interest. • Accurately document and assist with finances of individuals. • Teach skills to individuals. • Assist residents to be involved in the community. • Implement and document goals/ intervention plans. • Work hours based on the best interest of residents. • Transfer people who use wheelchairs to their bed/ toilet. 5) Maintain Household Operations a) The DSP will involve the individual in all household operations, encouraging them to be as independent as possible. The DSP will work alongside individuals and ensure high standards are met by completing tasks, should the individual be unable to completely perform the household task. Examples include but are not limited to: • Household cleaning • Cooking • Laundry • Grocery shopping • Weeding flower beds/ caring for landscape • Cleaning ovens • Shoveling snow • Maintain agency vehicles • Washing floors • Report issues to maintenance 6) Communicate with Others a) The DSP needs to become an expert on their assigned individuals and program sites. Information needs to be communicated in a timely, accurate and professional manner for the services to run smoothly. Communication includes both verbal and written information. Examples include but are not limited to: • Keep support staff informed of essential information. • Interact positively and professionally with consumers. • Interact respectfully with parents, case management, day program representatives, neighbors, and significant others. • Report and document incidents. • Report and document medication errors. • Appropriately use the chain of command • Document intervention plans and complete all other paperwork as needed. • File documents in consumers files 7) To Implement and follow all regulations: a) The DSP must be familiar with all regulations. They are responsible to provide services in a manner consistent with regulation and report areas where correction is needed. 8) To be flexible and dependable: a) The DSP must be flexible and dependable with their schedules in order to meet the needs of the individual and agency. This includes arriving to work on time, covering for sick co-workers, being at work during inclement weather and not doing personal activities while working. DSPs are required to assist in finding their own coverage when they use paid time off. As a TLC employee there may be required times that you may need to work at other various TLC locations. 9) Create a positive culture for all employees to work in: a) Encourage all to build a positive culture through their work and actions. b) Provide a positive environment of learning and growth for all. c) Encourage all to discuss issues and resolve them when able. d) Enter situations with a positive attitude. e) Communicate effectively with all employees of TLC in order to meet the needs of the individuals in our service. 10) Model exemplary leadership to all those internally and externally: a) Be flexible and dependable. b) Promote a positive culture for all employees to work in. c) Hold yourself and others accountable for their actions. d) Work to create a culture of inclusiveness for everyone. e) Treat everyone with dignity and respect. f) Engage in training either at TLC or elsewhere. 11) Communicate effectively and respectfully to all internal and external stakeholders: a) Communicate effectively in order to advocate for the best care and treatment of the individuals in your care. b) Ensure confidentiality is maintained in all communication. 12) Administration/Office Skills Required: a) Use of computers, tablet or mobile devices, use of email, and ability to adapt and learn new software. b) Office equipment, e.g., copier, fax, phone system and use good written and/or communication and telephone etiquette. c) Basic Mathematics for Money Management 13) Physical Requirements **OCCASIONALLY-0-35% OF TIME FREQUENTLY-36-74% OF TIME CONSTANTLY-75% OF TIME ** Necessary skills/requirements to perform task examples may include but are NOT limited to: i. MUST be able to lift and/or move at least 50 lbs. pounds in order to assist in life skills, such as bathing, bringing in groceries, physical rescue, and wheelchair assistance. ii. Weight ABOVE 50 lbs; where assistance is needed, help will be provided for team lift or use of device/tool such as dolly, jack, belts, lifts or as prescribed by ISP. a) The employee is frequently required to stand, sit and walk. b) Frequently use hands to finger, handle, reach with arms and hands below or at waist level and ABOVE shoulder height. c) Occasionally be able to pull, push, lift, carry. d) Occasionally be able to stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl e) Constantly be able talk or communicate, hear, taste or smell. f) Specific vision abilities may include close vision; color vision and the ability to adjust focus. g) Occasionally be exposed to all outside weather conditions, dust and fumes while working with residents and staff. h) Noise level in the work environment may vary from quiet, moderate to occasionally loud, but shouldn’t exceed 85 dBA or require the use of ear protection, (unless otherwise stated & will be provided). 14) Possible Additional Duties & Assignments: The duties below are some examples of what might be additionally required but are NOT limited to those listed. a) Capable of travel to various meetings in the community. b) Complete additional jobs as assigned. c) Superior judgment and reasoning. d) Ability to handle the physical demands of interacting with consumers (see above) or the ability to understand consumer’s behavior and use good judgments to mitigate personal risk. e) Ability to drive and transport consumers in a company vehicle. f) May be requested or required to follow supervisory direction from an Executive Officer (such as Executive Director) that keeps within the code & conduct of the Organization to better assist the organization, community, consumer or other associate. QualificationsMinimum Qualifications: Education: High school diploma or GED Age: Eighteen years of age or older Ability to Drive: Valid Driver’s license. Health: Certification from a licensed independent practitioner that the person is free of contagious disease.
