Veterinary ICU Technician – Emergency & Critical Care

$16–$24/hour DOE | Gilbert, AZ | Full-Time | 3x12-Hour Shifts

Arizona Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center (AVECCC) is seeking a Veterinary ICU Technician to provide hands-on nursing care for critically ill and hospitalized patients in our 24-hour emergency and critical care hospital in Gilbert, AZ. Work alongside board-certified Critical Care doctors in a high-acuity ICU where you’ll develop advanced veterinary nursing skills, manage complex cases, and receive ongoing training and mentorship.

In Your Day-to-Day You Will

Provide Critical Care Nursing

• Monitor critically ill patients and quickly recognize subtle or sudden changes in condition

• Perform and document ongoing patient assessments, including physical exams, vital signs, laboratory results, and response to treatment

• Provide continuous nursing care, including medications, treatments, diagnostics, and other care directed by the attending veterinarian

• Perform accurate drug calculations and medication administration

• Place and maintain IV catheters and operate IV pumps

• Monitor fluid therapy and communicate changes in patient status to the veterinary team

• Maintain accurate, complete, and legally defensible medical records

• Participate actively in patient rounds and provide thorough handoffs at shift changes and throughout the day

• Communicate patient updates and treatment information clearly with veterinarians and incoming team members

Support Advanced ICU Diagnostics & Procedures

• Perform in-hospital laboratory testing and prepare specimens for outside laboratories

• Perform and assist with diagnostic procedures including radiology, ultrasound, ECG, blood pressure monitoring, and glucose testing

• Monitor anesthesia using equipment such as pulse oximetry and ECG

• Maintain accurate anesthesia and surgical records

• Assist veterinarians with emergency procedures and other critical care interventions

• Apply strong knowledge of veterinary pharmacology, nursing procedures, and emergency medicine to patient care

Maintain the ICU Environment

• Keep ICU, treatment, and patient care areas clean, organized, and properly stocked

• Restock medications, supplies, exam rooms, and treatment areas

• Delegate appropriate cleaning and husbandry tasks to Technician Assistants and Kennel Assistants

• Maintain controlled drug logs and follow medication-handling procedures

• Follow OSHA requirements and hospital health and safety protocols

• Use veterinary practice-management and workflow systems, including ezyVet, SmartFlow, and Timeless

Work as Part of the Critical Care Team

• Collaborate closely with Critical Care veterinarians and the broader nursing team

• Support other hospital departments when needed

• Assist Client Administrators with patient and client needs as appropriate

• Share knowledge and clinical skills with Technician Assistants and other team members

• Provide constructive feedback and contribute to a positive, professional team culture

• Identify opportunities to improve patient care, client service, and hospital efficiency

• Approach challenges with active problem-solving and a solutions-focused mindset

What We’re Looking For

• Veterinary nursing or technician experience equivalent to the responsibilities of this position

• Strong working knowledge of emergency veterinary medicine and critical care

• Excellent veterinary nursing and technical skills

• Ability to recognize changes in critically ill patients and respond appropriately

• Proficiency with IV catheter placement, IV pumps, medication administration, and drug calculations

• Experience with veterinary diagnostics, patient monitoring, and medical records

• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

• Ability to multitask, prioritize, delegate, and manage workflow in a high-volume ICU

• Strong computer skills and ability to learn veterinary practice-management software

• Professional, dependable, and team-oriented approach

• Willingness to teach and support the development of other veterinary team members
