The Industrial Painter is responsible for mixing, matching, and applying paint, varnishes, and similar coatings to various materials and surfaces. They also complete touchups and coordinate large painting projects. They use various techniques to apply paint, including sprays, rollers, and brushes. The Industrial painter will work in manufacturing industry. In addition to the painting itself, the industrial painter is responsible for cleaning and preparing the surface to be painted, removing previous finishes (including by sandblasting), and cleaning up of the area after each step of preparation and painting itself is done. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Industrial Painter performs a wide range of duties including some or all of the following:

  • Prepare parts for coating.
  • Follow all principles and practices of wet paint application
  • Operate all coating equipment including guns, hoppers and booth collection systems to apply industrial pain finishes on metals and products
  • Observe machine gauges and equipment operation to detect defects
  • Determine paint flow, viscosity and coating quality by performing visual inspections or by using viscometers  
  • Bake parts at appropriate temperatures within time limitations
  • Knowledge of thermosetting resin coatings, wash and pretreatments
  • Ensure that all components are produced/coated efficiently, and are consistent with company established goals for quality and customer order on-time performance
  • Ensure quality standards and processes are used throughout facility
  • Ensure safety guidelines are being met to assure a safe work environment
  • Load and unload parts or product onto fixtures
  • Good knowledge of the mechanics and repair of painting equipment
  • Proper cleaning and maintenance of equipment
  • Mixes paints and other solutions and monitors drying to ensure desired results.
  • Completes finishing with baking, polishing or other materials
  • May paint items by hand as needed

Qualifications

Education Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required 

Experience Requirements

  • 1 to 3 years of experience and/or training in industrial, or automotive equipment painting
  • Experience in mixing and differentiating colors

Professional designation

  • Prefer ASE Certification 

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of trade tools, equipment, materials, methods and techniques use in industrial painting
  • Lock-out/Tag-out procedures
  • Ability to understand basic mechanical and manufacturing techniques
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize, schedule and review work
  • Effectively and safely operate a variety of assigned tools and equipment
  • Interpret blueprints, shop drawings, sketches and work orders to others
  • Maintain routine records
  • Ability to work on multiple priorities with frequent interruptions
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently without daily supervision

Proficiency in the use of computers for:

  • ERP Production Software

Industrial Painter should demonstrate competence in some or all of the following:

Language Skills - Effectively communicate and understand job instructions both verbally and written in the English language. Ability to effectively interpret and translate instructions from and to other employees in a professional and respectful manner.

Mathematical Skills - Ability to perform basic mathematical computations.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability - Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables

Working Conditions

  • The work environment is in a manufacturing facility where noise level is usually moderate 
  • Work is performed while standing, sitting and/or walking.
  • Requires the use of hands for simple handling, grasping and fine manipulations
  • Requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, and reaching
  • Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull medium weights, up to 50 pounds
  • Requires standing for long periods of time
  • Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull materials up to 50 pounds
  • Requires making repetitive motions while operating equipment.
  • Requires activities involving being around moving machinery
  • Work a standard work week but may be required to work some overtime
