The role you’ll contribute:

Competently performs clinical patient assessment related to job title. Delivers therapy to patient's including breathing treatments, EKG's and arterial blood gases. Manages oxygen therapy, performs adult and infant intubations, and manages mechanical ventilators per protocol or by following physician specific orders. Assesses patients ordered for respiratory protocol to determine proper type and frequency of respiratory treatment. Adequately completes patient documentation in computer charting system; including documentation in interdisciplinary education and plan of care.

  • Assists with bedside bronchoscopy procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Responds to rapid response calls, code blue situations, and performs CPR.
  • Reviews workload, makes staff assignments, and assists with technical questions when serving as shift lead.
  • Follows regulatory requirements in the blood gas lab, runs quality control tests, and changes analyzer cartridges.
  • Documents interdisciplinary education and plan of care.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary rounds and provides input to ensure appropriate patient care.
  • Draws, analyzes, and reports blood gases to assess respiratory status.
  • Delivers aerosolized medication, oxygen therapy, invasive and non-invasive ventilation, and performs lung function testing.
  • Performs respiratory therapy treatments and procedures per provider orders, department policy, and recognized standards of care.
  • Sets up, monitors, and adjusts ventilators, both invasive and non-invasive, and documents changes.


The expertise and experience you’ll need to succeed:

  • Associate Required
  • Bachelor's Preferred
  • One or more years of Work Experience Preferred
  • Must take RRT Exam and pass within 6 months of hire date.
  • Has worked in an acute care (hospital) setting within the last year.
  • Perform respiratory therapy treatments and procedures competently according to physician’s orders, department policy, respiratory protocol and recognized standards of care.
  • Able and is willing to rotate throughout all patient care areas.
  • Follows all established policies
  • Draws, labels, results, and reports blood gases and critical values according to policy.
  • Interdisciplinary education and plan of care is documented on initial treatment and as needed thereafter
  • Is a team player and makes decisions and takes actions that consider the needs of the department and co-workers.
  • Is able to calibrate and perform bedside pulmonary function tests.
  • Is able to set up, monitor, and make changes on all ventilators, invasive and non-invasive, including documentation of all changes in i-view
  • Able to complete therapy driven protocols appropriately. Patients are placed on appropriate therapy according to their condition and diagnosis.
  • Oxygen rounds and breathing treatments are performed timely, including documentation.
  • Checks overdue medication and task list prior to end of shift and completes outstanding orders.
  • All errors, inefficiencies, and inaccuracies are brought to the management’s attention. Identify and implement methods to control costs or generate revenue while providing maximum value to the patient and the hospital. Control department operational costs through appropriate use and maintenance of supplies and equipment.
  • Basic computer knowledge including, word and excel, and computerized medical record documentation
  • Mechanical and non-invasive ventilation knowledge
  • Able to perform ECG’s accurately. Downloads order to cart, selects patient, saves and transfers ECG to Cerner. Charts ECG’s done in Cerner. Removes competed ECG’s from task 
  • NBRC Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) (NBRC-CRT) or RRT Required
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Required
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Cert (PALS) Preferred
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Cert (ACLS) Preferred
