The Training Coordinator Intern will support the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of training programs for Transmission System Operators and Balancing Authority Operators. This role provides hands-on experience in coordinating technical training, maintaining compliance documentation, and supporting simulator-based learning in a real-time operations environment.

The intern will assist with key aspects of the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT), including analysis, development, design, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) of training materials and programs. Responsibilities will include supporting training logistics, developing simulator scenarios, creating multimedia training content, and collaborating with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to enhance operator readiness.

This position offers a unique opportunity to gain exposure to electric utility operations, including how operators are trained to maintain the reliability of the Bulk Electric System in accordance with regulatory standards.

Interns will have the opportunity to observe the control center environment, support training activities, and gain exposure to the tools and systems used to maintain grid reliability.


Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
•    Maintain training records, documentation, and compliance tracking
•    Support development of training simulator scenarios that reflect situations and events on the Energy Management System  
•    Video capture and edit training video content
•    Collaborate with SMEs to develop training content and courses through the complete lifecycle of the ADDIE process - Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Analysis, Evaluation  
•    Aide in program review and development following systematic approaches


This position is for a May 31, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Current student, Freshman or higher
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Business, Training & Development, Human Resource Development, or simila
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Freshman or Sophomore
  • Willing to work through the school year
  • Maintains a positive attitude 
  • Takes initiative and works independently in a fast-paced, small team environment 
  • Demonstrates a willingness to learn technical concepts related to transmission system operations
