GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Systems Technician is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of facility utility and process support systems. This position oversees critical equipment including ammonia refrigeration systems, HVAC systems, boilers, condensers, cooling towers, water softeners, and effluent water treatment systems. The Systems Technician ensures compliance with all applicable safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements while supporting uninterrupted facility operations. The Systems Technician works collaboratively with production, maintenance, quality, and other departments to support operational goals, identify opportunities for process improvements, recommend solutions to system or operational challenges, and ensure work is completed accurately, thoroughly, and in a timely manner. 

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot industrial ammonia refrigeration systems.
  • Conduct routine inspections of compressors, evaporators, condensers, pumps, valves, controls, and related equipment.
  • Respond to refrigeration system alarms and emergency situations.
  • Support Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Plan (RMP) compliance requirements.
  • Maintain accurate operating logs and maintenance records.
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC equipment including air handling units, exhaust systems, ventilation systems, and associated controls.
  • Monitor system performance to ensure proper temperature, humidity, and air quality.
  • Perform filter changes, belt replacements, lubrication, and system calibrations
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair condensers and cooling tower systems.
  • Monitor water treatment programs and equipment performance.
  • Perform routine cleaning, water quality testing, and maintenance activities.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and operational issues to maximize system efficiency
  • Operate and maintain water softening equipment and related treatment systems.
  • Monitor water quality specifications and chemical usage.
  • Perform system regenerations, inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance activities.
  • Operate and maintain wastewater collection, treatment, and discharge systems.
  • Monitor treatment processes to ensure environmental compliance.
  • Collect samples, perform testing, and maintain regulatory records.
  • Troubleshoot pumps, motors, controls, and treatment equipment.
  • Perform preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and control system issues.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, P&IDs, and technical manuals.
  • Utilize CMMS software for work orders, maintenance records, and inventory tracking.
  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and regulatory inspectors as needed.
  • Participate in facility improvement and reliability projects.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned


work Experience and Personal skill requirements

  • Minimum 3 to 5 years’ experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting industrial utility systems in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Experience with boilers, HVAC, cooling towers, water treatment, and wastewater systems. 
  • Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting abilities. 
  • Knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems and Process Safety Management (PSM)
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision. 
  • Demonstrated initiative in identifying equipment, system, and process improvements

Education requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or technical certificate in industrial maintenance, HVAC/Refrigeration technology, electrical, or related field preferred.
