Position Mission Statement

To demonstrate a servant’s heart to KFG’s clients and the firm by providing timely, considerate, and professional service.   The Tax Preparer will prepare tax returns for individuals, small businesses, or organizations under the guidance of a certified public accountant. 

Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Prepare Federal and State Income Tax Returns for Individuals (Form 1040 and any state equivalents)
  • Prepare Federal and State Income Tax Returns for small businesses (Forms 1120, 1120-S, 1065, Schedule C and any state equivalents)
  • Prepare Federal and State Income Tax Returns for Trust, Nonprofit (Forms 1041, 990)
  • Prepare Federal returns for Gift and Estate (Forms 706, 709) 
  • Prepare amended Federal and State Income Tax Returns for Individuals and Small Businesses
  • Present completed tax returns to clients to confirm accuracy and full client understanding
  • Prepare annual 1099’s for small business clients to provide to their vendors
  • Prepare Personal Property Tax Returns for small business clients with tangible business assets
  • Review tax returns prepared by other staff members for accuracy
  • Review client tax notices and correspondence audits and provide recommended next steps
  • Assist clients with resolving tax notices and correspondence audits by IRS and other taxing authorities 
  • Work independently or with Client Service Coordinators to respond to client communications and other service requests
  • Participate in weekly Case Class with other KFG professionals
  • Prepare tax projections to assist clients and their advisors with tax planning 
  • Collaborate with KFG Financial Advisors and other professionals to understand client’s tax situation and advise clients on the tax consequences of their financial decisions
  • Consult with clients to develop a basic understanding of their financial affairs and the scope of their tax liabilities
  • Provide client education and advice about income tax related topics
  • Review previous tax returns and financial documents to identify missing or incomplete information or documentation
  • Review supporting tax documents and information supplied by client to determine accuracy and completeness before finalizing tax returns
  • Communicate with clients 
  • Calculate tax owed or refunds due to client, consult tax law publications for guidance on unusual situations
  • Maintain understanding and knowledge of changes in tax law by reading professional literature or attending tax seminars and training courses
  • Maintain understanding and knowledge of tax preparation software (UltraTax CS) and related procedures 
  • Achieve annual personal goal for tax returns prepared, completed, and collected as set with Department Leader 
  • Perform other duties as required


Required Skills and Abilities

  • Use the appropriate software (UltraTax CS) to prepare tax returns
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work on multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Above average typing, math, and analytical skills
  • Must be well organized with time, resources, physical office space
  • Must be intrinsically motivated and able to work individually with little direction
  • Must be a team player and able to collaborate with team members and financial professionals from other firms when needed
  • Comfortable interacting with clients and team members via telephone, email, video conferencing, or face-to-face
  • Must be coachable, goal oriented, grasp concepts quickly, able to work in a fast-paced environment, embrace change, and have a strong desire to learn and grow in the financial services industry

 

Education and Experience

  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or EA (Enrolled Agent) designation with PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number) required
  • Minimum 2 – 3 years tax preparation experience required
  • Minimum 5 - 8 years tax preparation experience for Senior Tax Preparer required
  • Previous experience using Thomson Reuters UltraTax CS preferred
  • Previous experience using QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop preferred


 Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
