Position Summary

Gateway Regional Medical Center is seeking an experienced Director of Pharmacy to lead and oversee the daily operations of the hospital Pharmacy Department. This position is responsible for ensuring safe, effective, timely, and cost-conscious medication services while maintaining regulatory compliance and promoting quality patient care.

The Director will lead pharmacy staff, manage department operations and resources, oversee medication safety, and collaborate with physicians, nursing, and hospital leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee daily Pharmacy Department operations.
  • Develop and maintain department policies, procedures, goals, and performance standards.
  • Ensure safe and accurate medication preparation, dispensing, distribution, storage, and inventory management.
  • Oversee controlled substances, automated medication distribution systems, and pharmacy technology.
  • Oversee sterile and non-sterile compounding practices, including hazardous medications.
  • Maintain compliance with federal and state pharmacy regulations, hospital policies, and accreditation standards.
  • Prepare the department for regulatory surveys, inspections, and audits.
  • Recruit, train, develop, schedule, and evaluate pharmacy staff.
  • Manage the department budget, expenses, supplies, medications, and other resources.
  • Monitor pharmacy quality and performance and lead process improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, Medical Staff, Quality, Risk Management, Infection Prevention, Finance, and other departments.
  • Serve as a pharmacy resource for medication-related questions and patient safety concerns.
  • Promote a culture of professionalism, accountability, medication safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduate of an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy.
  • Current Illinois Pharmacist license.
  • Minimum of 2 years of hospital pharmacy supervisory experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience as a Registered Pharmacist preferred/required based on organizational qualifications.
  • BLS certification.

Preferred:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD).
  • 5+ years of pharmacy leadership or management experience.
  • Acute-care hospital pharmacy leadership experience.
  • Experience with unit-dose and automated medication distribution systems.
  • ACLS certification.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced pharmacy leader with strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills. The Director should be committed to patient safety, regulatory compliance, employee development, quality improvement, and collaborative relationships across the hospital.
