POSITION OVERVIEW 


The paramedic assists various nursing and cardio-pulmonary departments with patient care and other duties. At all times the paramedic should function with the authorized scope of practice for EMS personnel at their respective certification level.   

Essential Functions:

  • Assist Respiratory Therapy personnel with patient care activities related to cardio-pulmonary therapies; including oxygen, humidification, nebulizers, aerosols and other authorized treatments, with an understanding of the indications and contraindications of such therapies. 
  • Operate with nursing, allied health, and providers as part of a care team to provide recommendations on care for patients. Participate in multi-disciplinary teams, i.e. code blue or rapid response.  
  • Assist with the management of basic and advanced airways, including intubations. 
  • Provide set-up and regulation of mechanical ventilators to include trouble-shooting and resolving issues.  
  • Complete assessment and vital signs on patients; documenting and providing updates to providers and other nursing personnel as needed. 
  • Function in a nursing aide and/or monitor tech role on nursing units as needed. 
  • Requires the ability to assist providers with invasive procedures, i.e. intubation, chest tube placement, thoracentesis; under critical, time-sensitive conditions. 
  • Will be required to work in various clinical departments, cardio-pulmonary, nursing, OB, or surgery. 
  • Maintains equipment for cleanliness and proper operations, submits work orders for maintenance and repair.   
  • There are other duties, while not considered essential for this position, are required as part of the function of this position. 

Requirements

Education and/or Experience:

  • An associate degree or equivalent required. 
  • New Mexico or National Registry Paramedic certification required.  
  • Current BLS (CPR) and ACLS required, must be maintained during employment. 
  • PALS must be acquired within nine months of employment and maintained during employment. 
  • A strong understanding of Patient Confidentiality and HIPAA.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. 
  • Independent judgment to plan, prioritize and organize a diversified workload. 
  • Analytic ability to gather and summarize data for reporting, help determine solutions and prioritize work.
