York Space Systems is seeking aĀ Junior / Early Career Flight Software Platform EngineerĀ to support the Flight Software Engineering team.Ā

This role is intended for an engineer early in their career who is interested in embedded Linux, spacecraft systems, mission-critical software, and hands-on platform development. The Platform Team owns the operating system foundation used to deliver embedded flight software for space applications.Ā 

Ā 

Ā The ideal candidate is curious, technically motivated, and excited to learn Linux platform development, embedded software practices, hardware/software integration, and flight software delivery in a fast-moving aerospace environment.Ā 

Ā 

This is a hands-on engineering role with mentorship from senior engineers and technical leads. Over time, this engineer will grow ownership in embedded Linux platform components, integration workflows, test automation, and software release support.Ā 

Ā 

KeyĀ Responsibilities:

  • Participate in an agile scrum team focused on supporting the embedded Linux platform used to deliver flight software for space applications.Ā 
  • Support development and maintenance of theĀ embedded Linux platform, including:Ā 
  • Linux kernel configuration and debuggingĀ 
  • Bootloader and BSP supportĀ 
  • Root filesystem updatesĀ 
  • Core system services andĀ systemdĀ configurationĀ 
  • Device driver integration and troubleshootingĀ 
  • Platform scripts, tools, and configuration filesĀ 
  • Embedded Linux interfaces and processesĀ 
  • Collaborate with team members, management, systems engineers, hardware teams, application teams, and mission operations to support project execution.Ā 
  • AssistĀ with understanding and expanding requirements based on high-level specifications, system needs, and mission use cases.Ā 
  • Contribute to platform stability, security, and maintainability by:Ā 
  • Investigating bugs and integration issuesĀ 
  • Supporting software updates and release activitiesĀ 
  • HelpingĀ maintainĀ reproducible buildsĀ 
  • Documenting changes, assumptions, and troubleshooting stepsĀ 
  • IdentifyingĀ risks and raising issues earlyĀ 
  • Communicating challenges, failures, and successes clearlyĀ 
  • Participate in technical design reviews and code reviews to improve quality and maintainability of deliverables.Ā 
  • Support implementation of software architectures and designs that meet requirements.Ā 
  • Develop code following project coding guidelines, process requirements, and review expectations.Ā 
  • AssistĀ with unit, integration, software-in-the-loop, and hardware-in-the-loop testing, including:Ā 
  • Developing and executing unit testsĀ 
  • Verifying requirements and interface behaviorĀ 
  • Supporting code coverage activitiesĀ 
  • Helping analyze test resultsĀ 
  • Supporting SITL and HITL integration and testingĀ 
  • Capturing test results and release artifactsĀ 
  • Work with other subsystems to support proper integration of platform software into the broader flight software design.Ā 
  • Participate in implementation approach discussions by helping evaluate cost, complexity, schedule, and technical risk.Ā 
  • Support continuous improvement of team practices, including:Ā 
  • Improving documentation and knowledge sharingĀ 
  • Automating repetitive development or test tasksĀ 
  • Contributing to CI/CD improvementsĀ 
  • Participating in retrospectives and post-release reviewsĀ 
  • Helping improve release confidence and integration qualityĀ 
  • Grow technical ownership over time in areas such as:Ā 
  • Yocto-based build systemsĀ 
  • Linux kernel customizationĀ 
  • Device trees and low-level hardware interfacesĀ 
  • Embedded networking conceptsĀ 
  • Platform test automationĀ 
  • Flight software deployment and update flowsĀ 
  • Software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop environmentsĀ

Required QualificationsĀ 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent experienceĀ 
  • 0–3 years of experience in software development, embedded systems, Linux, or related areasĀ 
  • Basic programming experience in one or more of:Ā 
  • CĀ , C++Ā , Python, Bash / shell scriptingĀ 
  • Familiarity with Linux development environmentsĀ 
  • Interest in embedded Linux, spacecraft systems, or mission-critical softwareĀ 
  • Familiarity with basic software development practices, including Git, code reviews, debugging, and documentationĀ 
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical issues with support from senior engineersĀ 
  • Willingness to learn complex systems and ask good questionsĀ 
  • Ability to communicate technical challenges, risks, and progress clearlyĀ 
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skillsĀ 
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional engineering environmentĀ

Preferred QualificationsĀ 

  • Internship, academic, hobbyist, or project experience with Linux or embedded systemsĀ 
  • Exposure to Linux internals, bootloaders, kernels, device trees, or root filesystemsĀ 
  • Exposure toĀ Yocto,Ā Buildroot, or other embedded Linux build systemsĀ 
  • Exposure to cross-compilation and low-level system interactionĀ 
  • Familiarity with device drivers or hardware/software interfacesĀ 
  • Familiarity with networking concepts and protocolsĀ 
  • Experience with GitLab, CI/CD, issue tracking tools, or automated test pipelinesĀ 
  • Experience with hardware bring-up, lab equipment, or debugging on target hardwareĀ 
  • Familiarity with unit testing, integration testing, SITL, or HITL testingĀ 
  • Interest in aerospace, spacecraft operations, or operational software systemsĀ 
  • Hobbyist project experience using Linux, embedded boards, robotics, radios, or home lab environmentsĀ 
  • Ability to obtain orĀ maintainĀ a US Secret ClearanceĀ
