A Day in the Life of a Systems Engineer

As a Systems Engineer, you'll start your day by monitoring the health, performance, and security of First Onsite's technology environment across AWS and Azure. You'll serve as a key escalation resource for the Service Desk and Infrastructure teams, troubleshooting complex technical issues and helping keep critical systems reliable and available. You'll work with cloud-native technologies, including AWS Lambda serverless applications, containerized workloads, and managed database services such as Amazon RDS and PostgreSQL.

Throughout the day, you'll design, deploy, and manage cloud infrastructure while partnering closely with development teams to build scalable and reliable solutions. You'll champion Infrastructure-as-Code practices using Terraform and AWS CloudFormation and collaborate through GitHub to support development and deployment efforts. You'll also maintain strong monitoring and observability across environments, proactively identifying potential issues and using system insights to improve performance, reliability, and overall user experience.

You'll also play an important role in strengthening First Onsite's security, compliance, and IT service management practices. You'll manage Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Entra ID, support security and compliance initiatives, and oversee the organization's ServiceNow ITSM environment. You'll help lead incident management and change control while continuously looking for opportunities to improve technology, processes, and operations. Every day, your work will combine advanced technical expertise, proactive problem-solving, and collaboration to help build a secure, resilient, and innovative technology environment.

  • Deploy, configure, and maintain Windows Servers, Active Directory, and cloud environments (Azure/AWS)
  • Manage and develop knowledge bases, ITSM platforms (ServiceNow), and infrastructure integration projects
  • Own and resolve incidents, changes, problems, and system migrations, ensuring high performance and reliability
  • Assess, implement, and maintain new technologies, automation tools, and patch/security updates
  • Train and coach IT team members on processes, procedures, and best practices
  • Administer VOIP, collaboration, and communication platforms, ensuring scalability and maintainability
  • Design, deploy, and manage cloud infrastructure across AWS and Azure using Infrastructure-as-Code tools (Terraform, AWS CloudFormation)
