STAFF ACCOUNTANT

Position Summary

The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the financial operations of the construction company by maintaining accurate accounting records, assisting with month-end and year-end close processes, analyzing project costs, and ensuring compliance with company policies and accounting standards. This position plays a key role in job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, subcontractor accounting, and project financial analysis.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES |

General Accounting

  • Prepare and post monthly journal entries.
  • Perform bank, credit card, and general ledger account reconciliations.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
  • Support the preparation of financial statements and management reports.

Construction and Job Cost Accounting

  • Monitor and maintain job cost accounting records for active construction projects.
  • Review project costs for accuracy and proper coding.
  • Assist project managers with budget-to-actual cost analysis.
  • Track committed costs, change orders, and project-related expenses.
  • Prepare and analyze Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules.
  • Investigate and resolve project cost variances.

Accounts Payable and Receivable Support

  • Review subcontractor invoices and supporting documentation.
  • Verify lien waivers, insurance certificates, and contract compliance.
  • Assist with owner billings, progress billings, and collections.
  • Support subcontractor payment processing and vendor reconciliations.

Compliance and Reporting

  • Assist with annual audits and tax preparation.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
  • Support sales tax, use tax, and other regulatory filings.
  • Maintain organized accounting records and documentation for audits and project reviews.

Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting procedures and internal controls.
  • Assist with ERP system maintenance and process enhancements.
  • Participate in special projects and financial analysis as assigned.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS |

  • Minimum Education |
    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related business field preferred
    • Associate degree in Accounting or relevant accounting experience may be considered
  • Experience | 2yr
    • Accounting, bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll or related financial experience
    • Construction or project-based environments preferred but not required
  • Technology | 2yr
    • Accounting software / Sage preferred
    • MS Office Suite
