Therapeutic Recreational Specialist
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 12 noon to 8:30 pm, with one weekend per month required
Annual Salary: $49,284
The Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board (H-NNCSB) is seeking a Therapeutic Recreational Specialist to join our team at the B.J. Roberts Behavioral Health Center. This position provides therapeutic recreation services to adults experiencing behavioral health and substance use crises and helps individuals develop coping skills, improve socialization, and achieve their treatment goals.
The B.J. Roberts Behavioral Health Center is an urgent care center serving adults experiencing behavioral health or substance use crises. The center supports Emergency Services, Marcus Alert, the 23-Hour Crisis Observation Program, and the Regional Crisis Stabilization Center, providing coordinated services to individuals experiencing acute behavioral health needs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreational Therapy, or a closely related field.
- One (1) year of experience working with individuals in a behavioral healthcare setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess clients' leisure interests, abilities, and needs using standardized tools, clinical observation, and collaboration with the treatment team.
- Develop and implement individualized and group recreation therapy treatment plans aligned with clinical goals.
- Facilitate therapeutic recreation interventions that support treatment objectives, including stress management, emotional regulation, social interaction, and self-esteem building.
- Monitor and evaluate client progress and adjust interventions to support continued growth, recovery, and wellness.
- Complete accurate and timely documentation, including assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, discharge summaries, and incident reports, in accordance with clinical and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate with clinicians, case managers, nursing staff, and other service providers to integrate recreation therapy into comprehensive treatment plans.
