Description:

Saint Francis Hospital & Medical Center, Hartford, CT

We are seeking an experienced and collaborative Manager, Anatomic Pathology to lead the daily operations of the Anatomic Pathology service line, including Histology, Surgical Pathology, Cytology, Autopsy, and related laboratory support services. This leader is responsible for operational excellence, quality and regulatory compliance, staffing and team development, financial stewardship, and customer satisfaction across inpatient, outpatient, and outreach services.

The Manager partners closely with Pathologists, laboratory leadership, and clinical stakeholders to optimize workflows, standardize best practices, improve turnaround times, and ensure accurate, timely diagnostic results that support exceptional patient care. The ideal candidate combines strong leadership skills with technical expertise and a commitment to continuous improvement, employee development, and service excellence.

What you will do:

  • Lead daily operations for Histology, Surgical Pathology, Cytology, and Autopsy services, ensuring optimal staffing, workflow, and service excellence.

  • Recruit, develop, and manage laboratory colleagues, including training, competency assessment, performance management, and employee engagement.

  • Drive quality and regulatory compliance with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, OSHA, and state requirements while maintaining continuous survey readiness.

  • Partner with Pathologists and clinical leaders to optimize workflows, turnaround times, service quality, and patient care outcomes.

  • Oversee quality management programs, performance metrics, and process improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and diagnostic accuracy.

  • Manage laboratory policies, procedures, equipment, technology implementations, and validation activities to support best practices.

  • Develop and manage departmental operating and capital budgets, vendor relationships, and resource utilization.

  • Collaborate across laboratory and clinical departments to ensure seamless service delivery, effective communication, and continuous improvement.

  • Support strategic growth initiatives, digital pathology advancements, and organizational goals through innovation and operational leadership.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Physical, Chemical, or Biological Science; advanced degree preferred.

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in Anatomic Pathology with at least three (3) years in a lead/supervisory/manager role.

  • Certification HTL(ASCP), CT(ASCP), PA(ASCP), or equivalent; meets CLIA high-complexity personnel requirements or ensures designated technical supervisors are in place per regulations.

  • Demonstrated leadership, change management, and talent development skills; ability to train, supervise, and evaluate technical and support staff.

  • Proficiency with QA/QC principles, validation/verification, AP instrumentation, LIS/AP-LIS workflows, digital pathology concepts, and continuous improvement (Lean/Six Sigma/RPI).
