Direct Support Professional (DSP) – In-Home Support

Location: Hurt, Virginia
Position Type: Full-Time
Schedule: 55 hours per week


Position Overview

Kahak Health Care Services is hiring a dependable Direct Support Professional (DSP) to provide 1:1 In-Home Supports for an adult in the Hurt/Pittsylvania County, VA area.


Schedule

  • Monday: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Tuesday: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Thursday: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Friday: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Sunday: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM


What You Will Be Doing

The DSP will help the individual become more independent at home and safely participate in the community. Support may include:

  • Teaching simple meal preparation
  • Helping with laundry and household routines
  • Providing reminders for personal care
  • Providing bathroom hygiene assistance as needed
  • Going on safe community outings
  • Helping the individual follow routines and learn new skills
  • Providing close supervision for safety


About the Individual

The individual is primarily nonverbal but understands directions well. He follows routines and learns best through repetition, modeling, and simple step-by-step instructions.

He enjoys:


  • Computers
  • Movies
  • Bowling
  • Swimming/water activities
  • Vintage items such as VHS tapes
  • Community outings


The individual is very sensitive to loud sounds. The DSP should be calm and patient, give him enough time to process instructions, and make sure his headphones are available when needed.


Important Safety Information

The DSP must be comfortable providing close supervision. Important areas include:

  • Attempting to leave an area when overwhelmed
  • Limited safety awareness
  • Eating too quickly
  • Finger biting or skin picking when distressed
  • Sensitivity to loud noises
  • Direct supervision around water because the individual cannot swim


Who We Are Looking For

The best DSP for this case will be patient, dependable, calm, observant, and comfortable providing 1:1 support.

The DSP should be willing to teach and encourage the individual to do things for himself instead of doing everything for him. Consistency and following his established routine will be important for success with this case.


Requirements: A minimum of one year experience in the medical or a related field (social work, psychology, nursing assistance, etc.) and a high school diploma or equivalency. Must be 18 years of age. Additionally, the following are required:

  • A reliable car
  • A current driver's license
  • A current work authorization (US Passport, US Work Authorization card, Permanent Resident Card) or a Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Card
  • Current auto insurance
  • Current CPR & First Aid
  • Current physical exam
  • Current tuberculosis test with negative result
  • Resume

If hired, background checks (FBI) and a Central Registry (CRS) check will be required.
