The Lead Mechanic is responsible for leading the team, overseeing and performing maintenance and repair of the fleet equipment. Equipment includes but is not limited to wheel loaders, excavators, skid steers, forklifts, man lifts, and grinders. The Mechanic should have demonstrable work practices with safety as the number one goal. You will perform appropriate preventive maintenance on equipment and necessary repairs to keep machines up and running daily.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Perform services, diagnostics, and parts replacement for company fleet
  • Identify problems and come up with viable solutions
  • Service conveyers and various sorting equipment
  • May perform training to the other mechanics; oversees overall performance and makes recommendations to the manager
  • May be responsible for reports and documentation
  • Other duties as assigned

Scope of Responsibility:

This role is a working lead responsible for overseeing daily maintenance and repair activities for fleet equipment while actively performing mechanical work. The Lead Mechanic provides guidance and training to mechanics, monitors work quality and safety compliance, and makes performance recommendations to management. Decisions made in this role directly impact equipment uptime, safety, and operational efficiency.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Work in a team environment
  • Full-time position with overtime opportunities
  • Must have own tools (large impact tools will be provided)
  • Able and willing to learn computer tracking software
  • Able and willing maintain a clean work environment
  • ASE certifications and/or vocational/technical training are a plus
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Diagnostic and problem-solving skills preferred
  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
  • Ability to read electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic schematics

Education & Experience:

  • Waste industry experience, a plus
  • Completion of college or vocational or technical training, a plus
  • Experience with routine maintenance operations is required
  • A valid CDL driver license is a plus
  • Must be 21 years of age, or older

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Handling heavy tools and parts, sometimes lifting up to 70 pounds.
  • Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and working in awkward positions.
  • Fine motor skills for handling small parts and tools.
  • Typically work in garages or workshops, which may be noisy, have unpleasant odors, a limited ventilation.
  • Exposure to chemicals, oils, and other hazardous substances.
  • Often required to wear protective gear, such as gloves and safety glasses.
  • May be required to lift up to 75 pounds.
