Overview

Summary:

The Deckhand will assist with the operation and maintenance of 150-passenger vessels including the application of emergency procedures and assisting as a member of the vessel crew with line handling, cleaning, and assisting passengers. 

 

Pay: DOE 

Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply emergency and fire regulations, emergency procedures, emergency equipment, and systems applicable to vessel operation.  
  • Knowledge of proper vessel handling and docking. 
  • Basic knowledge of vessel maintenance. 
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills. 
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees. 
  • Ability to work directly with the public, providing information, and assistance on a daily basis. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • One (1) to two (2) years of maritime industry experience. 
  • Must have a driver’s license. 
  • Current First Aid CPR certificate. 
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check and drug test; subject to random drug testing. 
  • Must be able to pass a breathalyzer test before each shift for Kensington Mine. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience on a passenger vessel

 

Working Conditions

The work is performed on a vessel with a passenger capacity of 150 people, utilizing multiple docks with exposure to inclement weather conditions and potentially rough seas. On occasion, the vessel may be required to perform beach landings to load and offload passengers. Hours vary and will include working on holidays and weekends. May be required to stay overnight at Kensington Mine when weather conditions are too rough to operate normally.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Responsible for line handling, taking on fuel and water, handling gangways, removal of trash, and basic vessel and engine maintenance.  
  • Functions as one of the key crew members when instituting emergency procedures, following the emergency checklist and explaining any deviation from the latter, and applies knowledge of and explains the first actions to take in the event of man overboard and vessel flooding. 
  • Assists with training crew members during periodic drills.
