Construction Safety Manager

Excavation / Sitework / Heavy Civil Construction

We are seeking a motivated Construction Safety Manager to support and coordinate our company safety program. This is a hands-on, field-oriented position working with project managers, foremen, equipment operators, laborers, drivers, shop personnel, and company management.

This position is ideal for someone with construction and safety experience who is looking to continue developing their career in construction safety. Experience in excavation, underground utilities, site development, earthwork, or heavy civil construction is essential.

The Safety Manager will spend significant time visiting active jobsites, observing work practices, identifying potential hazards, documenting safety concerns, assisting with corrective actions, conducting safety meetings and orientations, and maintaining company safety records.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine safety inspections of active jobsites, the company yard, and shop.
  • Observe work practices and identify potential safety hazards or areas of concern.
  • Document safety observations and work with Foremen, Project Managers, and management to ensure appropriate corrective action.
  • Monitor compliance with company safety policies and applicable OSHA construction standards.
  • Assist with monitoring excavation and trenching operations, including access and egress, spoil placement, protective systems, underground utility hazards, and other applicable requirements.
  • Observe heavy-equipment operations, backing procedures, spotter practices, equipment/pedestrian interaction, and jobsite traffic control.
  • Assist with monitoring other construction safety requirements including PPE, fall protection, silica exposure, hazard communication, electrical hazards, and lifting/rigging practices.
  • Conduct new-hire safety orientations and assist with toolbox talks and company safety meetings.
  • Coordinate outside safety training when required.
  • Maintain employee safety training and certification records.
  • Maintain company safety files and assist with required OSHA recordkeeping.
  • Assist with OSHA 300, 301, and 300A records as applicable.
  • Assist management with workplace injury, accident, near-miss, equipment incident, and property-damage investigations.
  • Prepare incident documentation and assist with tracking corrective actions.
  • Assist with Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and project-specific safety planning.
  • Maintain inspection, training, incident, and corrective-action records.
  • Help track safety trends and recurring issues.
  • Work with field and shop personnel to promote safe operation of equipment, trucks, trailers, tools, and company vehicles.
  • Participate in project startup and safety meetings as needed.
  • Help maintain and update company safety policies, procedures, and written programs.
  • Stay current with applicable construction safety requirements and continue developing knowledge of OSHA regulations and industry best practices.

Qualifications

  • Construction industry experience strongly preferred.
  • Previous safety-related experience or education preferred.
  • Familiarity with OSHA construction safety requirements.
  • Interest in developing a career in construction safety.
  • Ability to recognize potential hazards and communicate concerns effectively.
  • Comfortable working with construction crews and experienced field personnel.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to use basic computer programs for recordkeeping, reports, email, and training documentation.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel regularly between local jobsites.
  • Ability to work outdoors and walk active construction sites in varying weather and terrain.

Certifications & Preferred Qualifications

  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification. 
  • Excavation/Trenching Competent Person training.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or a related field is a plus but not required.
  • Experience with excavation, underground utilities, site development, or heavy equipment operations is essential.
