5-Axis Machinist  

Lapeer, MI

$30.00 - $35.00/Hourly

(2nd Shift) 

  

We are hiring a Senior CNC Machinist in Lapeer, MI to support advanced manufacturing operations involving 5-axis CNC machining centers, Mastercam programming, precision machining, and aerospace/defense production environments. This role requires extensive experience with CNC setup, programming, machining complex metallic components, GD&T interpretation, quality systems, and process optimization while supporting military vehicle and defense manufacturing programs.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Set up, program, and operate vertical and horizontal 5-axis CNC machining centers to manufacture precision metallic components.
  • Program CNC machines using Mastercam software to support complex machining operations.
  • Perform machining operations including surfacing, profiling, boring, facing, threading, and precision finishing of castings, weldments, forgings, plates, blocks, and tubing.
  • Review work orders, engineering drawings, blueprints, machining specifications, and GD&T requirements to plan machining operations.
  • Perform machine setups, tooling selection, offset adjustments, compensation calculations, and program prove-outs.
  • Establish workpiece locations using stock models, tooling balls, and precision setup techniques.
  • Verify setup accuracy through machine travel validation, head clearance checks, first-article inspections, and dimensional verification.
  • Monitor machining operations, inspect finished parts, troubleshoot machining issues, and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and process improvements to optimize quality, efficiency, and machine performance.
  • Maintain compliance with quality standards, manufacturing procedures, and production requirements.
  • Perform preventive maintenance activities and support Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) initiatives.
  • Document production activity, machining results, and quality data within ERP systems.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Programming, Materials, and Quality teams to resolve manufacturing challenges and improve production outcomes.
  • Support continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, and operational excellence initiatives.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship is required by Federal Law
  • High School Diploma or GED required; equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
  • Minimum 5 years of CNC machining experience across multiple 5-axis machining applications.
  • Minimum 2 years of Mastercam programming experience.
  • Experience operating and programming advanced 5-axis machining centers, including platforms such as Zimmermann, Apec, FPT, Mecof, or similar equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, machining specifications, and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience performing CNC machine setup, tooling selection, offset management, and program validation.
  • Strong understanding of machining principles, tooling, fixturing, precision measurement, and quality control processes.
  • Knowledge of ERP systems and production documentation processes.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations involving geometry, trigonometry, ratios, percentages, and dimensional analysis.
  • Knowledge of quality management systems, manufacturing procedures, and shop floor best practices.
  • Ability to pass background screening, employment verification, reference checks, and controlled substance testing.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Heidenhain and Fidia machine controls.
  • Crane operation experience.
  • Knowledge of AS9100, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 standards.
  • Experience with 5S and lean manufacturing methodologies.
  • Knowledge of environmental management systems and continuous improvement practices.
  • Experience supporting aerospace, defense, military vehicle, or precision manufacturing programs.
