Job Summary

The Substation Equipment Monitoring Group is responsible for designing, procuring, and installing monitors on both new and vulnerable electrical equipment assets, which include: transformers, circuit breakers, capacitor banks, generators, and control house batteries. This role will support a group initiative to provide analysis tools that offer insight to electrical equipment operations and help prevent catastrophic equipment failures.

 

This technical intern position will ride along with and assist Substation Operations Technical Specialists with daily routine tasks, which will provide the intern with exposure and fundamental understanding of the following substation equipment monitors: transformer monitors, dissolved gas analyzers, circuit breaker monitors, generator monitors, capacitor bank monitors, power quality monitors, and infrared cameras.

The intern will learn how the team periodically retrieves data throughout the day from each of these devices, how data is analyzed, and how automated alarming for threshold violations is configured. Basic tasks will include:

  • Developing familiarity with substation one-lines and control design prints.
  • Assisting with new monitor installations.
  • Verifying internal and external wiring to monitor enclosures.
  • Updating and maintaining software databases.
  • Creating webpages for new monitor installations.
  • Resolving loss of communication alarms.
  • Terminating fiber optic cable and punching down ethernet cable.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Prefer candidates with good problem-solving skills while working with mechanical and/or electrical equipment and control circuits.
  • Computer aptitude and experience with software applications.
  • Familiarity with operating and handling power tools.
  • Must be able to follow instructions and be a team player.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Time management and organizational skills.

 

Education Requirements

  • Must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited Engineering program at a four year college or university. 

  • Must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher. 

  • Must have a graduation date of Spring 2028 or later.
