Position Summary:
The Executive Director (ED) is the senior operational leader responsible for market-level execution, performance delivery, and day-to-day management of physician and payer partnerships.
This role owns the execution of the market operating plan, ensuring delivery against financial, clinical, and operational targets including medical margin, total cost of care, quality performance, and partner success. The ED translates regional strategy into actionable plans and drives disciplined execution in partnership with physicians, health plans, and cross-functional teams.
Operating within agilon’s Total Care Model, the ED ensures consistent performance through strong operational management, performance accountability, and continuous improvement. This leader serves as the primary integrator across stakeholders, ensuring alignment, issue resolution, and delivery of results at the local market level.
Essential Job Functions:Â
- Operate effectively in a highly matrixed, fast-paced, and team-based environment. Market Performance & ExecutionÂ
- Execution accountability for market-level P&L and operating performance, including medical margin, total cost of care, and budget adherenceÂ
- Execute against defined performance targets, including cost, quality (STAR), utilization, and risk adjustment accuracyÂ
- Translate regional strategy into actionable market-level operating plansÂ
- Ensure delivery of financial and clinical results through disciplined execution and performance managementÂ
- Identify performance gaps and implement targeted operational interventions Operational Leadership & DeliveryÂ
- Lead day-to-day market operations, ensuring execution against budgets, plans, and performance standardsÂ
- Drive operational excellence initiatives focused on improving efficiency, quality, and cost outcomesÂ
- Oversee implementation of care model programs, clinical pathways, and workflow optimizationÂ
- Ensure effective use of technology, data, and analytics to support operational performanceÂ
- Lead project management activities, including planning, execution, risk management, and reportingÂ

Physician & Partner Execution LeadershipÂ
- Serve as the primary leader of the local physician partnership, ensuring alignment, engagement, and executionÂ
- Partner with physicians and market clinical leaders to drive performance across cost, quality, and utilizationÂ
- Facilitate performance reviews, provider engagement, and adoption of care model initiativesÂ
- Address and resolve operational challenges impacting partner performance
Payer Operations & Performance ManagementÂ
- Manage day-to-day relationships with health plan partners, including payer representatives and operational contactsÂ
- Own Joint Operating Committees (JOCs), performance reviews, and issue resolutionÂ
- Ensure payer performance aligns with contractual expectations and operational goalsÂ
- Support implementation and execution of payer initiatives at the market level
Team Leadership & Market OperationsÂ
- Lead, develop, and mentor market team members, fostering a culture of accountability and executionÂ
- Ensure effective coordination across clinical, operational, and administrative functionsÂ
- Conduct regular team meetings, performance reviews, and coaching sessions
- Build a high-performing team focused on delivering measurable results
Growth & Market Development (Execution-Focused)Â
- Support membership growth and provider expansion initiatives through operational executionÂ
- Ensure readiness and onboarding of new providers and contractsÂ
- Execute growth initiatives aligned with regional strategy and market opportunities
- Perform other duties as assigned.Â

Required Qualifications:Â
Minimum ExperienceÂ
- 8+ years of experience in healthcare operations, managed care, or provider organization
- Â Prior experience in a senior operational leadership role with accountability for performance outcomesÂ
- Experience managing healthcare operations, delivery systems, and process improvement initiativesÂ
- Familiarity with value-based care, including cost, quality, utilization, and risk adjustment driversÂ
- Experience working with physician groups and payer partners in a matrixed environmentÂ
Education/LicensureÂ
Bachelor’s degree in healthcare management or related field (or equivalent experience) required. Master’s degree preferred.Â
Skills and Abilities:Â
