Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Service Manager to lead and oversee commercial mechanical and HVAC service operations throughout the Sacramento and Northern California market. Based out of the company's Lodi office, this individual will play a critical role in managing field technicians, supporting customers, ensuring operational excellence, and driving the continued growth and profitability of the service department.

This is a highly visible leadership role that requires someone who is comfortable being in the field and leading from the front. The position will be approximately 20% field-based and 80% office-based, working directly with technicians, customers, and internal leadership to ensure service work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standard.

The Service Manager will have direct access to ownership and the opportunity to help build the company's Northern California operations. For the right leader, this role offers a clear pathway to Head of Operations, with the opportunity to eventually oversee the company's entire Northern California operation.

On-call availability will be required to support customers, technicians, and urgent service needs when necessary.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage day-to-day commercial HVAC and mechanical service operations throughout the Sacramento and Northern California market.

  • Spend the majority of time in the field supporting technicians, visiting job sites, meeting with customers, troubleshooting operational challenges, and ensuring work is completed to company standards.

  • Provide hands-on leadership, coaching, training, and accountability to service technicians and field personnel.

  • Manage service schedules, manpower allocation, workflow, and job priorities to maximize efficiency, productivity, and customer satisfaction.

  • Serve as a key point of contact for customers, building owners, property managers, and facility teams, ensuring a high level of communication and service.

  • Support technicians with technical problem-solving, job-site challenges, and customer escalations.

  • Monitor service department performance, including labor efficiency, profitability, response times, quality, and customer satisfaction.

  • Review service work, job costing, and operational performance to identify opportunities to improve margins and efficiency.

  • Partner closely with sales and operations teams to ensure smooth transitions between service, maintenance, retrofit, replacement, and project work.

  • Help grow and strengthen the Northern California service operation by improving processes, developing team members, and building scalable systems.

  • Recruit, develop, and retain top service talent while creating a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

  • Maintain a strong focus on safety, quality control, and adherence to company and customer requirements.

  • Participate in an on-call rotation and remain available to support urgent customer and technician needs as required.

  • Work directly with ownership and leadership to develop long-term operational strategies for Northern California.

  • Position yourself for continued advancement into a future Head of Operations role overseeing the company's entire Northern California operation.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in commercial HVAC, mechanical services, or a closely related trade, with significant field experience.

  • Prior experience in a Service Manager, Service Supervisor, Operations Manager, or similar leadership role strongly preferred.

  • Strong technical understanding of commercial HVAC and mechanical service, maintenance, repair, and replacement operations.

  • Proven ability to lead, coach, and hold technicians and field personnel accountable.

  • Comfortable spending approximately 20% of your time in the field and 80% in the office.

  • Strong customer service and relationship-building skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with building owners, property managers, facility directors, and other stakeholders.

  • Experience managing schedules, manpower, workflow, service priorities, and operational performance.

  • Financial and business acumen, including an understanding of job costing, labor efficiency, profitability, and service department performance.

  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple technicians, customers, and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm and decisive during urgent service situations.

  • Comfortable with on-call availability and responding to urgent operational or customer needs when required.

  • A hands-on, accountable leader who is willing to lead from the front and spend significant time alongside the team in the field.

  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the desire and capability to grow into a larger operational leadership role.

  • Must live within a reasonable commuting distance of Lodi/Sacramento, CA, with the ability to travel throughout Northern California as needed.
