Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Manager - Mason, Paint, Roofing and Sign Shops, and the direct supervision of the Supervisor, Paint and Sign Shops, receive work assignments from Supervisor and/or Lead Painters; inspect and maintain painted exterior and interior painted surfaces, trimming and fixtures of buildings and other related structures and facilities. Use premixed paints or custom prepared paints; apply wood finishing (new and/or old surfaces) by appropriately preparing surface. Cover interior walls and ceilings of offices and related facilities with wallpaper or fabrics. Operate and maintain High Pressure Low Volume (HPLV) Spray Booth Equipment in order to finish and refinish wood, metal and synthetic surfaces. Prepare surfaces and apply stains, paints, shading stains, and clear finishes. With smaller projects and minor repairs, evaluate problem. Discuss jobs with Supervisor and/or Leads in order to keep apprised of job progress and resolve any problems related to the job; submit completed work orders to Supervisor and/or Leads. Provide direction to semi-skilled or unskilled workers. Maintain accurate hours on each job; operate and maintain a variety of power and/or hand tools and equipment of the trade; follow established safety procedures; clean up job site and return equipment and tools; respond to off-hour emergencies and overtime as required. Follow established safety procedures at all times; clean up job site and return equipment; maintain spray volume logs and Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) logs.

Qualifications

  • 1. Working knowledge of materials, equipment, methods, standard safe work practices, and tools of the painting trade including achievement of operational skills. (Required)
  • 2. Working knowledge of: paper, vinyl, and various special coatings; application and preparation; chemicals and solutions to remove coatings; dry wall taping and patching; surface and object protection; scaffolding (Required)
  • 3. Skill in: performing arithmetic calculations to determine square footage of surfaces and areas; estimating material and labor requirements to accomplish tasks. (Required)
  • 4. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, subordinates, supervisors, administrators, customers, visitors and outside agencies. (Required)
  • 5. Skilled in: writing simple English phrases using correct grammar and spelling to complete reports that are accurate and easy to comprehend; reading standard English texts in order to follow through on written orders and carry out assignments. (Required)
  • 6. Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments. (Required)
  • 7. Ability to operate and maintain High Pressure Low Volume (HPLV) spray booth equipment. (Required)
  • 8. Knowledge of equipment, products, procedures and methods required for finishing and refinishing of wood, metal, synthetic surfaces within a spray booth environment. (Required)
  • 9. Ability to: match existing stain and paint colors; properly prepare surfaces and apply stains, paints, shading stains and clear finishes. (Required)
  • 10. Oral communication skills to obtain or convey clear, concise and grammatically correct information (Required)
  • 11. Proficient at modifying and/or adapting designs, procedures, or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications. (Required)

  • Other Type of Degree Satisfactory completion of a certified 4-year trade-related apprenticeship program or equivalent experience and education. (Required)
  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
