A perfusionist is a highly skilled, allied health professional who is qualified by academic and clinical training to operate complex, life-sustaining, extracorporeal circulation devices. These devices are typically applied to alleviate the suffering of patients with certain cardiovascular or pulmonary diseases. Duties include but are not limited to the safe performance and execution of the following Scope of Practice.

Responsibilities

Responsible for Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) set up, operation, and troubleshooting.

Sets up and operates Heart-lung machine during open-heart surgeries.

ECMO set up, initiation, operation, and troubleshooting.

VAD/ BiVAD set up, operation, and troubleshooting

Autologous blood collection and cell saving devices set up and operation.

Administration of cardioplegia and maintenance of myocardial preservation.

Blood-gas and chemistry monitoring, analysis, and corrective action.

Systemic anticoagulation: monitoring, analysis, and corrective action.

Inducing deep hypothermic total circulatory arrest (DHTCA) and reversal.

Ultrafiltration methods including ZBUF and CAVH.

Administration of medicines and blood products per standing orders.

AngioVac circuit set up and operation.

Documentation associated with described duties.

On-Call responsibility to be shared with team members.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Required Education: Bachelors Degree

Required Certifications and Licensures: Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) OR board eligible (certification required within eighteen (18) months or three (3) consecutive testing cycles of employment)

Preferred Qualifications:

Masters Degree or Higher 

 

Salary Range:  $133,227.00 - $199,841.00
