Our client is seeking an experienced Legal Counsel – Contract Management & Legal Operations to join its Legal function in Malta.

Working closely with the Head of Legal, the successful candidate will provide commercially focused legal advice and support across a broad range of day-to-day legal matters, while helping to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations and internal policies.

A key part of the role will be taking ownership of contract management and legal operations, including improving legal processes, governance frameworks and internal procedures. The successful candidate will also support strategic legal and regulatory projects and identify opportunities to make the Legal function more efficient, scalable and technology-driven.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the full contract lifecycle, including drafting, review, negotiation, execution, renewal, termination and record management.

  • Draft, review and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements.

  • Develop, implement and maintain legal processes, policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

  • Maintain contract repositories and ensure appropriate document management and governance standards.

  • Regularly review and update standard contractual templates and legal documentation.

  • Coordinate legal, regulatory and transformation projects across the organisation.

  • Research and assess legal matters and advise stakeholders on potential legal and commercial risks.

  • Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency of the Legal function through process improvements, automation and technology.

  • Manage and oversee document execution processes, including the use of electronic signature tools.

  • Identify and track legal issues and provide proactive, commercially minded recommendations.

  • Support AML and KYC checks where required.

  • Work closely with internal and external stakeholders on legal and contractual matters.

  • Undertake other legal and operational responsibilities as required.

Requirements

  • A law degree from an accredited institution.

  • At least 3–4 years of professional legal experience, gained within a law firm and/or an in-house Legal function.

  • Strong experience in commercial contract drafting, review, negotiation and management.

  • Good knowledge and understanding of commercial law.

  • Experience within telecommunications, e-commerce, IT, software, technology or a related industry would be considered highly advantageous.

  • Knowledge of data protection legislation and legal compliance.

  • A legal practising warrant would be considered an advantage but is not essential.

  • Knowledge of AML and KYC requirements would be considered an asset but is not essential.

  • Strong written and spoken English.

The successful candidate will be commercially minded, hands-on and capable of taking ownership of legal matters from start to finish. They should be comfortable working in a growing organisation where they can contribute not only as a legal adviser but also to the development and improvement of the wider Legal function.

They will have strong organisational and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and sensitive or confidential information. A proactive approach to identifying risks, improving processes and introducing more efficient ways of working will be particularly important.
